Browning 1885 low wall in 22 hornet questions
« on: April 07, 2009, 06:06:57 AM »
Has anyone had any luck with this gun round combo?  Accuracy at 100 yards with scope?  How about lead are the lead shooters?  Overall satisfaction, and what should I have pay for one, ball park, bare gun.   Thanks for any input.  SN

Mine shot OK but nothing spectacular. The barrel is .223" NOT .224" so take that into consideration when loading for it. You'll need to use .223" bullets or cut back on powder if using .224". It's been far to long to recall my loads but I was able to get around an inch at 100 as I recall and Hornady factory loads shot well.

Thanks greybeard.   After several years of posting and mostly reading here I am starting to think you may have tried about everything at one time or another!     I had no idea what to expect from it and with the wind blowing like it has been  it may be a while before I get to find out.  The cute factor should be eneogh to sell anyone, but if it shot good and was cute well hey thats the entire ball of yarn there.  Hoping to get a chance to find out.  Thanks for your help,  SN

Haven't tried everything but have tried a LOT. I quit counting a long time ago but I'd guess I've gone thru at least 500 different guns by now. Perhaps more highly unlikely less.

I really have not worked a lot with my LW Hornet but what shooting I have done with it is very close to what Graybeard got with his.
Remington factory 45 gr. loads about an inch. Reloads with the 40 gr Speer bullet, about the same. I did try the 50 gr. Nosler BT and a max load of IMR 4227 and the twist is to slow. I got keyholes at 50 yards. I have not tried any of the .223" bullets yet only .224". I have 40 gr. Nosler BTs, 45 gr. Remington HPs and Nosler 45 gr. Hornet bullets that I have not tried yet. It is a very fun gun to shoot though and I think I can get better groups when I really get to work on it.

Greybeard I have this to say in my opinion you have lived the dream.  I have played with a few different guns but not evenin the single percent points of that.  Bruce thanks for information.  I feel dymb asking this but I noticed in you post you mentioned you are shooting .224 bullets, is the bore on a browning for .223 or 224?  I have not slugged mine and only had .223 bullet on hand.   My groups with the 45 grainer and imr 4227 seem to shot 1 inch will be about where its gong to run.   Shot one 1/2" three shot group, and two groups with two touching and the third as a flyer.  I figured the flyer was me or the old style lyman scope not getting into battery well enogh to shoot the same zero.

browning low wall is .223 as was the first hornets( springfield 22lr )that were converted to 22 hornet and several other early hornets. later guns were .224 that is why they were telling you to back off on powder if you shot .224 bullets in your low wall browning.

Sharps-Nut, as Graybeard and Dorothy said and most important from the information I got from a phone call to Browning a few years ago the bore on the LW Hornets are .223"

I am to young to be this forgetful yet old eneogh to realize this is going get worse not better.  Long story short there is more behind me than left in front.  :(
Side note the hornet seems to be ok on a lead diet.  Still no gas checks but a starting load with red dot seems to show promise at 30 yards froma setting position, maybe quarter size for 5 shots..   And the noise level is 22 long rifle level which is kinda neat not to need hearing protection.

Hello Sharps-Nut...
I have one of these little Brownings but have only shot Winchester factory ammo...I would like to shot cast...I am wondering what mold you are using and if you have shot cast out to 100 yds. yet?
Thanks for your reply...
