S&W Peformance Center hunting rig
« on: December 18, 2003, 04:05:35 PM »
I've got a 8 1/2" 629 S&W revolver that's just sitting around.  Was thinking about sending it to the Performance Center and have them make it into a real hunting machine.

Anyone ever done this?  What was your experience?

Thanks, Q

Quadzillabill:  I've had the S&W PErformance Center work over 3 of my revolvers.  First was a 6.5" Model 29-2 that I carried for years until I got tired of the thing wearing a hole in my hip every time I went out into the woods with it.  They installed a 4" Mountain Gun bbl, bead blasted the eniter pirece and blued it to match, and worked over the innards.  She now looks like a 4" Highway Patrolman with a hellova big hole in the barrel.  Had them do almost the same thing to my 6" Highway Patrolman, except they installed a 3.5 inch bbl for the Model 27, then blued the enitre thing to match and worked over the innards and man, this is one sweet lookin' and sweet shotting set of S&Ws.  The third revolver they worked over for me is the Model 38 - Lightweight Bodygurad - I carry.  The Performance Center smoothed the innards out just right and she is a main carry piece.

I do feel that you cannot go wrong by sending yours to the Performance center.  Their work is top notch.  HTH.  Mikey.

While it pains me to give the current owners any of anyone's money or any credit it does seem to me you already have as good of a "a real hunting machine" as you need or will get back. What the heck do you want or think they can do to improve it?

I'd just as soon have an 8-3/8" .44 Mag revolver for my hunting as about anything. Sight radius is long enough for good iron sight accuracy and not so long as to be in the way for scope use. For a pure iron sight gun I do prefer a wee bit more but have used 8-3/8" S&Ws to kill a lot of game all over.

I personally think the only thing they can do for you is drain some of the surplus funds you have. I'll be happy to take them and donate them to a favorite charity for you. Then you'd still have just as good a hunting gun and that would keep the money out of the hands of those folks until they make an honest move to get out from under the agreement while we still have a Republican in office.

Point taken.  O

ne of the free hunting rags they give away at the shops did a project gun like this, where they replaced the barrel, worked on the trigger and did a whole bunch of accurizing work to it.  Ended up shooting under 1" AVERAGE groups at 25 yards with open sights.  I don't have much into this gun and thought that it might make it into something really special.

I'm a marketer's dream.

It truly is a great gun already - I understand that - but the search for the holy grail continues.  I always like something a little different from the crowd.

Back when I could still see the sights on my handguns shooting an inch or under at 25 yards was no big deal from the bags with many of my over the counter S&W guns. Heck I've done that many times free hand with my old S&W 686 with the four position adjustable front sight using handloads with my Lyman 358156 GC bullets over what is more H2400 than I'd be willing to admit to in public.

Guns are no more or less accurate with iron sights than scopes. YOU are just not as accurate most likely. I know I'm sure not these days. Besides I don't really trust the magazine writers to tell the truth. I've seen too many group photos you can look and tell aren't even close to MOA that they claim are well under. Also they some times will take one lucky group and call it what the gun will do.

back when I was into "sillywet" shooting I worked up a load in my Ruger sbh that grouped 5 shots into ONE inch at fifty yards off the bags.Unfortunately they would not let me shoot the targets using sand bags.I shot a few deer and ground hogs with this gun/load.The action was smoothed up by a friend and never needed more attention than cleaning.
Your money might be better spent on load developement. jh
