35 Whelen info
« on: May 12, 2009, 03:09:22 PM »
My first post - need some info.  Today at a local gun shop I found a Handi 35 Whelen, laminated stock, 1996 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation model with the medialon in the stock which looks to be in above average condition.  First two letters on serial number are HK which should make it about a 1996 model.  The asking price on green tag sale is $315.00.

I would like to know if these are worth buying, were these good barrels, etc. - thanks

If I found one locally for that price, in the condition you desribed with serial number and letters in order, it would follow me home.  Actually I might drive a little to look at it.  What shop did you say it was in? ;D ;D

I believe there were problems with the .35 Whelen in the Handi.  That is a good price.

There were no problems with the 1996 RMEF Ultra, just the 2006 Handi. The only caveat on the '96 frame is it can't be fitted with any high pressure * marked accessory barrels, and possibly any rifle barrels if Ilion has changed their policy on '96-'98 frames. FWIW, I paid $350 for my unfired RMEF 35 Whelen 4yrs ago.  ;)

I have a Standard Handi Frame, with one of the RMEF barrels.  It was barreled up for me after a call to Mr Garrison the CEO of NEF at the time.  I like it, and it is a great shooter.  If you buy it and don't like it let me know I'll take it off your hands.  It's got an ejector.  Rog

I have a 1996 RMEF 26" barrel on a newer H&R frame and it is a great gun with no problems. I think a 26" barelled .35 Whelen is a "must have" for a true Handi-holic. It may someday get me a Moose....<><....:)

My 1996 RMEF Ultra came with the .280 bbl I have since put a 30/40 Krag on it but it sits at the ready for that special 35Whelen. You can't pass on that even if you got to eat PB&J sandwiches for lunch til Labor Day.Kurt

Hey Kurt, what brand of Peanut Butter do you recommend.?  I'm eatin' it now to get ready.  I'd give my right cayouny for a Whelen, but I'm eatin' P.B now over the .357 mag and max parts and ammo.  If Patty ever finds out, I'll be looking for a home........it's gotta have a 300 yard range attached.

OK here is what happened with the 35 Whelen.  I stopped back in today, and of course it was sitting in the window saying take me home, take me home, just like a puppy.  The gun itself is in what I would call very good condition with just one small ding in the butt stock that you have to look for, the bluing and barrel are in likewise condition, or better.  I didn't mention that it had a 3X9 Bushnell (ok) scope for the asking price on the original post.

I checked it out again and ask if the previous owner was local and the answer was yes, that he traded this in for a new 45-70 - huh - likable dude- imigane that.  The 35 wasn't shot very much he just wanted a new toy to play with.  I ask for his name and wondered if he still had the dies for it and the reply was, oh yea, this box goes with it I don't have any use for it - in the box was 2 and 1/2 boxes of loaded ammo, factory Remington and a set of dies - all for $315 bucks.  (I steped back and wondered where I was going to get screwed later) and said yea ok I'll take her home.

That is where she is now - hopefully shooting weather for this weekend and I'll know just how good I actually did---------------

My .35 Whelen has taken several Moose and more than a few Black Bears.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement, I have two other Handis a 7mm08 and a .223.  I'm sure things will work out with the new one, if not volunteers have lined up to help me out.

I would like to see how she shoots this weekend but the salmon are starting to run and I may have to go to the river instead, damn, decisions - decisions---------------   ;D
