rechamber project-need input
« on: May 01, 2009, 11:26:20 AM »
got a 223 ultra barrel mounted up that has 1in9 twist, was figuring on rechambering to 225winchester. i see most rifling rates for this at 1in12 or 14, anyone had experience or opinion on this faster round in this fast twist? powders, bullet weights, etc? also, read quickdtoo posted approx. half of his handis were"built", where's places to look for rifle receivers for future projects? thanks.

The best place is the H&R Classifieds here, that's where I bought all of mine and welcome aboard!  ;)

Twist rates depend on what weight bullet you want to shoot. The 225 Win was considered a varmint round, so they made the twist rates slower for the lighter bullets. You can still shoot light bullets with a faster twist barrel. Pressures may be up a little and accuracy may not be as good as a slower twist barrel, but only MAY. You would need to try it to find out for sure. On the other hand you should be able to stabilize heavier VLD type bullets in the 65 - 70 grain area. The higher the BC they less the wind effects the bullet, but you get more arc in your shot - not as flat shooting as a faster lighter bullet. The popular thing is to go with a faster twist and a heavier bullet. I guess i buck the popular thing and go with a slower twist and lighter bullets. I just built a 223 with a short throat and 1-14" twist especially for 40 grain boat tailed bullets. Go ahead and chamber that 223 to 225, you will get higher velocity and who knows you may even get better accuracy, even with lighter bullets and if you want to shoot the heavy stuff, you are in the 22-250 range with it, only with a faster twist barrel. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I have a 223 1-9 ultra varmint fluted that I had rechambered to 225 win. It shoots 60 + gr bullets very well but ya can't shoot lighter bullets with any velocity which is what I am looking to do so I think next project might be my 1-16 twist Hornet bbl going to a 220 swift and the 225 going to the classifieds. I was working on a load for the 75gr Amax bullets but haven't had any time on it yet. Kurt

ive never had a 225 but i did ream a 1-9 twist 223 out to 22-250 ai and it still shoots well with light bullets . IMHO the faster twist is the best of both worlds  yoiu can go light of big with a slow twist you can only go light.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while
