Early 99/1899
« on: May 02, 2009, 02:23:38 PM »
I have obtained an early 99 in .308 Win and I am in need of some info. When I bought it, I paid $250 at a gun show because the barrel said 99E. and it was in good condition but nowhere near beautiful. I figured if it didn't shoot, a 358 was in the works.
Worked up a few loads with Sierra 150's and 180 SP Corelokts. Haven't done the chrono yet but 3 shots in an inch @ 100 yds I don't particularly care what it chrono's.
According to Savage99.com; the rifle was born in 1914. So what was the pressure of the 303 Sav, 22 Hi-Power, & 250-3000 compared to a 308Win. My current handloads are close to max 308 levels but are showing no signs of (too much) pressure. I need to know if I should be backing off a little or a lot.

FYI:  The .308 was first commercially introduced in 1955. and the .308 Win 99E in 1960.

If your rifle's bolt has a curved rear end, and it's a tang safety, it should be safe for all .308 loads.

A S/N range could help.
Usually early and 308 are not used together when speaking of the Model 99!

The serial #153xxx is 1914 according to the site in the sticky at the top. Only chamberings available were 22 HiPower 250 Savage  and 303 Savage.
I haven't pulled the gun down far enough to notice if the bolt is rounded on the end and it does not have a tang safety.
Finally dug up an old Speer manual #6 from the attic and it shows the above cartridges are held to about 45-46000 CUP.
I would have to pull the scope and mounts off to check the tang for a 1899/99 stamp.
