Spartan sxs 45-70
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:02:47 PM »
I held in my sweaty paws today a Spartan side by side in 45-70.  Not too shabby for a gun that isn't supposed to cost much.  Then I asked the price.  I had seen these advertised a year or so ago as if they were going to be under $500.00.  My dealer wants $1375.00 for his.  No way will I pay that, but just curious, has anyone actually seen one for sale elsewhere?  At $500.00 or less, I might buy one just to have it.  It only shoots low pressure (28,000) loads, which limits to Rem. green box or the like, but thats ok in a gun under 100 yds. on less than dangerous game.  At two and a half times that price, they will, I think, be hard to sell.

There's one on GB now, another sold recently. Remington only shows it in their model history, it's not currently offered, The SPR94 is their only current Spartan rifle offering.

Thanks for the links, Tim.  After holding the gun, I still don't see it as a high dollar rifle.  Too light, and just not "special" enough for me to spend that.  However, if production is not continued, and only a few are made, who knows, it may be collectable.

IS it true the 45/70 is only rated to trapdoor levels. The spartan waschambered in 06, which is 50k SAMMI limit. I can't see why the 45/70 would be less unless the wall thickness comes into play on the barrel.

It has very thin barrels, shotgun like, even back at the chamber.  It is marked for low pressure on the barrel, and just looking at it, I would not shoot even  the Hornady's in it.

From what I have read and seen online:
They are designed for use with lower power loads and the limit was actually stamped on the barrels.  No you could not hotrod them and trapdoor loads were what they were designed for.

I wanted one when they were first introduced and asked my dealer to get me one then waited and waited and waited till just recently when the dealer said Remington has now dropped them from the their line.

I would not hold my breath expecting them to reach collectors status in our life times.  They are spartan guns distributed by remington.  Just stamping the remington name on them doesn't make them remington collectibles..  I don't think.

They originally were advertised with a retail value of just under $600 I beleive but I have never seen one for much under $800 to $900.

Really wanted one and MSRP as I like 45-70's and would have loved a SXS in 45-70 even if I had to load it down.  Pretty much reserved myself to the fact that I am gonna need to build one off a double shotgun or have one built.  In either case I know it is gonna cost me well in excess of they were asking for the the Remington/Spartan guns.

I heard a rumour that they are going to be, since remington dropped them. distributed by one of the other importers but unable to confirm that at this time.  If they are maybe I will get a chance to add one to the group after all.

I put a call into hornady a few months back when I picked mine up, and they gave the ok for the lever-revolutions according to the Saami specs on the barrel .HOWEVER I will say they booted the crap out of me, much more severe than the Remington 405's, which were like a big soft shove or getting hit with a pillow. The Hornady rounds really were a sharp boot as well. Just my observations. Mine shoots awesome with the 405's, and I've just rolled a bunch of my own with 350 gr Hornadys, and will give a try as soon as enough snow melts to get into the range.

For DonT and anyone else interested in the Sparttans, they are made by Baikal, a Russian manufacturer. The Spartan name is owned by Remington, so you will need to look for them as baikal. I think Pedersoli also makes a 45/70 double. It costs a lot more than the Spartan/Baikal and can still only handle trapdoor loads though (if I recall correctly).

Just got e-mail from the Baikal importer. They say if you want to locate one, get in touch with Zanders Sporting Goods, Sports South, or call them at 1-800-536-4442.

The Baikal model number is MP 221 45-70

You can check inventory for EAA firearms at SSI at http://www.internetguncatalog.com/ they show the 30-06 sxs in stock, but not the 45-70.

For $1300, you can probably find a Valmet 412 or whatever it is marketed as these days. A much higher quality piece.

For the traditionalists around here, the over and under doubles just look like hell.
