7.62x39 and lead bullets
« on: April 05, 2009, 04:21:11 PM »
I got my Bullberry 7.62x39 barrel Friday.  It has a .308 bore which allows for a lot of flexibility in bullet choice.  So far it's a fantastic shooter with the loads that I have available.  I think that this little cartridge is a great cartridge for handloading in a good firearm, and is very overlooked as a serious cartridge because you mostly see it in AK-47's and SKS's.  In those firearms, it's performance is much less than stellar.

However, most of the reloading tables that I have for this cartridge are for .310 bullets, which is very limited.  Bullberry does not recommend using the .310-.311 diameter bullets in their barrel, and especially recommends staying away from the cheap imported ammo.

Does anyone know of any good reloading tables for this cartridge that use exclusively .308 diameter bullets?  I've managed to round up a few loads, and they all work great, but I would like to know if there has been any testing done with this cartridge, especially with cast lead bullets.  I would like to have some load data on heavy lead bullets like 150 grain and up.

Any information would be appreciated.

I've got a CZ 527 Carbine that shoots .308 cast bullets well.

Look at the following:

check your case capasity, it should be about equal to a 30 Herrett case,  the RCBS cast bullet manual # 1 isn't all that great, see if anyone has their # 2 manual which should list their 150,165 and 180 bullets in a Herrett.
The # 1 lists H322,  R L # 7, 2400 and 4227
Be sure to slug your throat, and size just over that.

I also have a Bullberry pistol barrel in 7.62x39.  I just size my cast leads with a Lee .309 sizing die and shoot them.  Reloading data for the 30 Herrett works just fine for cast lead bullets.  I have shot the Lee CE Harris cast bullet listed in their website.  I have been able to obtain 4" groups at 200 yards with this bullet.  I would have to look at my load data.  I believe RL7 and H4895 were two powders my gun liked.
