Is it just me.
« on: April 18, 2009, 01:35:14 PM »
I have been looking to buy a Handi in .223 with an additional barrel in 30-06.
Been at it for 2 weeks
Thought it would be easy, everyone else wants M16, M4, AK47.
My gun shop has not been able to find a supplier who has one!!
Has H&R stopped production or is there just that much demand for them?

I looked for a 30-06 for 2 months. 1 week I saw one on a local fishing board for a good price, then 1 at Gander Mountain for such a good price that I picked up that one too, and lastly, got offered a barrel here. I suggest a WANT TO BUY post for the 30-06 barrel.

I quit buying any firearms from my local dealers. One of them advertised a particular
rifle on sale in the paper that I had wanted to buy. I went there and payed for it and
filled out all the paperwork. The rifle was going to arrive from their warehouse
the next day. I get a call from them saying they are all out of that particular model.
They told me that they can get me something else. I insist that I don't want anything
else, I want the one I paid for, the one you advertised in the paper. They said they
were all out of them and they couldn't get any more. Really! I went online and found half
a dozen dealers that were selling the same rifle for less than these knuckleheads were
on sale! I printed all of that info out and brought it into the store manager and showed
it to him. I told him that you guys told me that no more rifles like the one I wanted were
available anywhere. I told him, "Well, here you go!" He told me that they were locked into
only a couple of distributors and couldn't just order something outside of their group. To
make a long story short I finally got the rifle from these guys about 6 weeks later. That
experience really upset me. I decided not to depend on other people to take care of my
business. I found a local 01 FFL that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for transactions.
I look online and find what I want from dealers or auction sites like Gunbroker.com or
others. Pay them and send a copy of my 01 FFL's license and my contact info and when
the firearm comes in I pay my FFL his fee and do a little paper work and the deal is done.
I found that by buying online I have a 1000% better selection and way better prices than
any local dealer could give me. (At least in my area) I have never got a got a bad deal yet.
I have bought new, used, old milsurps, shotguns, handguns, rifles, ammo and all of it has
been good. I could have never found anything locally for the prices that I paid online.

I have too for the most part. A couple of pawn shops around here have good prices on their guns but that is if you can find what you are looking for when you are looking for it. The rest of them want new or near new prices for used in any condition and ludicrous prices for new. I have a FFL that charges me $15 per transaction so when I am looking for a gun in particular I buy it online and have it shipped in to my FFL. So far I have had no problems at all doing this. I can count 7 guns in my mind without trying very hard that I have bought online in the past couple of years this way. I would search around and find a FFL that won't charge an arm and a leg to transfer and give it a try. Good luck. Charlie

Guns are not really that hard to get, but the current situation has effected prices on them. Ammo and reloading supplies are difficult to get and down right impossible for some. They are in such woeful short supply, that people are buying guns and not be able to buy ammo for them and in some cases; reloading supplies, like primers or bullets, in some of the most popular cartridges, cases too. It will slow down the gun sales, if you can not buy any ammo for them. When you can get ammo it is expensive. I do not buy much center fire ammo, reloading most of it. But I do buy rim fire ammo - Today I just bought 1 box of 50 CCI 22 Mag that were $19.95 - OUCH! I would have bought more, but not at that price, I just wanted to try them out, to see if they shoot well in my gun. On a brighter note I ordered a brick of 17 HMR for $110, choice is limited in either rim fire. There were no bricks or bulk packs of 22 Long Rifles of any kind for sale, just 100 and 50 packs and they were the more expensive types.

The run on firearm sales since the election certainly hasn't helped the availability of Handis, but I'd be inclined to think the shutdown of Gardner and move to Ilion is more at fault for shortages of many chamberings, I was told last fall that Remington would be concentrating on just the best selling H&R offerings while the Ilion plant was brought up to speed and their equipment is upgraded and improvements in fit are made, you can get an idea of what is available looking at SSI's inventory.

Cool link. I see they have an SC1-324 combo in stock. Didn't realize that the 20 gauge barrel was a rifled slug shooter.

Bud's has it in stock, it's listed on the H&R website as having a rifled slug barrel, they also make it in 44mag/12ga, great for those Indiana deer hunters.  ;)

Easier for me just to order through Dick's and save the FFL and shipping. No rush as the deer are making more deer now. And I have figured out that 12 gauge in a Handi is not for me. Heck, even 20 gauge slugs might shorten my weekend at the range.
