First Barrel
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:09:44 AM »
Ok, I am migrating from TC to Handi rifles. I just completed deals to get a BC frame & stock set; now I need to pick a barrel. I want to stick with a centerfire rifle or pistol caliber w/open sights 'cause I think that would look pretty on the BC set up. Probably range use only for a little while, but would like to be able to hunt <150 yds. with it eventually. I'm thinking .223, .30-30, .357 Mag/Max ...

I hate this. I know I at least want a .357 max cause I like the round, and can reload for it. But I find myself inexorably drawn towards the .223 and .30-30. Someday I'll want a 30-06, 12 ga and a .50 ML.

Where do you start? ???

You can't go wrong with a 30-30 Handi. They just plain shoot ;D
I don't hear too much bad about the 357 mag/max either. They seem to be shooters too.
Heck... I think they're all good. ;)

I do not think you can wrong with either the 30-30 or the 357.If you hand load you can get the 357 Mag into the low end 30-30 range. If you go to 357 Maxi you have in effect a 35 Rem +. I stayed with the 30-30 only because brass is easier to find/scrounge.  just my 2c      Doug

When I first started out I picked up the 223, fun to shoot, easy to load for, cheaper choice as far as reloading supplies and factory ammo (then!) But sense then I have had every cal other than 357, 450marlin, 45-70, and 45Colt. It's easy to get addictive.
I say pick one and run with it. You will end up with several most likely....

My recommendation on obtaining the first Handi is to first make a list of all the calibers you want, then put them in descending order (least favorite first) the start buying them until you have reached the end of the list, Of course by then you will have started a new list!
The reason for buying the least favorite first is to accelerate the purchases to get to the most favorite ;D ::)

I got a 45-70 and just bought a 45 Colt so next on my list is a 223 Ultra. I like complete rifles for now, working on my parts supply though. I think a 223, 357 or 30-30 would all be a fine choice, you will buy the others later on anyway.  ;)

I started out with a .223 and it was a tack driver, but kind of turned sour when I had 3 animals, coyote, 2 hogs, knocked down, but they got back up and ran off, at only 100 yards distance.

Fluke, or my bad shooting I don't know, but I've since gone with the .357 Max, and my 45-70 and they've performed well, and so far nothing has gotten back up and run off!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

The 45-70 first, because you will wind up with one anyway, its accurate, things won't walk away and it's fun.

Didn't someone post a poll or something a while back that said if you could only have one Handi rifle what would it be?

I think the 30-30 and the 45-70 were the top choices.

You can close your eyes and pick either one of those, and you wouldn't regret it.

I've got a BC complete rifle and a 270 barrel.
My next purchase is a complete 223. then I want a 30-30 and 35 Whelen.
Then I absolutely have to have a 45LC.
Then a 357, 30-06, and if I can ever find one, a 7x57.
Oh, and I can't forget the 25-06.

Damn, I think I might become a Hando-holic!

There are 3 must haves.

22" .357
22" .30-30
22" .45-70

There other calibers are ok I suppose.  I don't care for them much.

As much as I like all the calibers and love the 45-70, if it were me I would go with the 30-30 for a first barrel.
At the range you stated of 150YTDs it is a naturial and if you want to reach on out there say to 300 you can always ream to 307 Win.
Just a tad behind the 308.
I am getting ready to do one now.

Just M O !

If I were going to ream a .30-30, it would be to .30-40 Krag.  Ammo is much easier to find.

Maybe, but I am already set up for the 307 in my Win 94 Big Bore and have a good supply of factory ammo also.
I gave the Krag a good look but thought the 307 was a better deal for me.
