Scope for 44 Mag?
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:39:59 AM »
Good Friday Guys, Shot my new 44 mag at about 40 yds. cause thats where bench was. Shot a couple old loads I had for 10" contender Barrel. Very impressed with what those 200 gr XTPs did at that range. Couldn't see sights or target but Knew where they were and shot quite well. Now know what shooting blind is like. Looking at a Leupold 2-7x33 with LRD. Know it's not a long range cart! Wondering what range those little dots would be on target. Anyone think they can hit a groundhog at 200 yds. with a 44 Handi? Fat one sitting on my 200 yd. backstop. Already shot all my bullets. Sure would have liked to knock him off that mound. What scopes have worked well for you? Thanks!

Well now... you have just named my very favorite scope!!!!

I have one of these on most of my rifles, handis included!!! Two hundred is a poke with the 44, but I wouldn't doubt for a moment, it could be done!!!  I have hit 2liter water bottles at darn near that far with my 45 Colt Bisley hand gun!!

I have no experience with this reticule. I tend to go heavy for these calibers. Further limiting its long range capabilities at the same time enhancing what its good at, close range whitetail dumping "handi" gun.

cw, heavy duplex was my first thought. Can't find one to look through. Picture looks like center hairs are too close for me. My second choice was wide duplex. I seem to like a wider center hair. Thought the little dots would be good for different ranges and if it didn't suit me I could put it on another gun. Thinking of Quick Detach mounts so when I get 357 (MAXI)? they could swap.

Very Nice, Fits the gun well, low profile. I've always liked the German #1. Those are two different guns aren't they? They look like they would be fun to shoot. Top pic is the one you sent in for #1 reticle right 20mm? The ones they sell stock are #4 I believe and the crosshairs are too tight for me, in their picture anyway.  I like the uncluttered view of the #1.

I would get the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32.  The Weaver 2X is also excellent.

I use to have a scoped 44Mag with a 3 Post reticle scope and loved it.
44Mags can be a lot of fun and leave nice big hole with out all the recoil..

I have seveeral of the Weaver K 2.5's different Handi's and levers.  Like the looks of em with the straight tube out front.  I don't shoot alot of paper after sighting in, so that power works good for hunting or plinking.  That is mostly on cartridges that are shot 150-200 yd max.  On the longer reaching ones I like variables no higher than 9-10 power, if I can't see it good enough to shoot an animal at 7,8 or 9 power, I need to get closer!  Tim also mentioned good luck with Simmons shotgun scopes that look the same and I got 5, no problems with them, couldn't beat the price.  They were on sale for about $20.00 ea when I got them.  DP

For my 44 mag rifle i have a 2 pr leupold scout scope, with duplex reticle and it works great, with my tired eyes the glass lets me see both the reticle and the target and i like the field of view.

I have a Leupold 4X12 on my Ruger #1 with the LR setup. below the cross hairs there are two dots similar to a mil dot scope but there aren't as many dots, just the two. The idea being if you are dead on at X yards the two dots would allow something to hold on at extended ranges. Range would depend on caliber.

I have a simmons 4x with the diamond reticle on one of my 44 mag handi's.Works great for me out to 100 yards.I just bought my second one off of gunbroker a few weeks ago and it came with a tasco propoint.Have shot it a few times and the pro point works good out to 50 yards. It is going to Canada on a bear hunt in August, it should work for low light and stick out on the bear.

You are correct, these are two different guns, the first is my 500 as I orig bought it and the second my 280. Both Leupold 2X7's one a gloss one a Matt finish. 9ONLY THE 500 HAS THIS RETICULE) I also have The German #1 in my Maxi with a M8 3X x 20mm as well. That must be the 20mm your thinking of.

I've got a Leupold 1-4x20 shotgun scope on my 44mag Handi, and am very happy with it.  Has a heavy duplex reticle.  Worried about the brightness of a 20mm, but wanted a small lightweight scope.  Have found that it has all the brightness I need, even for woods hunting.  I tend to use it at 2x.  I've never shot my 44 at 200 yards, though it would be fun to try.  Ballistic program indicates holdover would be a whopping 15 inches at that range.  At that range I would probably want more than 4x also.

That whole light gathering nonsence, kinda goes out the window when you buy quality optics. ::) :D ;D

I have one of these in VXII's on each of my Ultra Slug 12 & 20 gauge handis. GREAT scopes with excellent optics!!
