.223 barrel on a SB-1 Frame
« on: April 07, 2009, 12:07:30 PM »
I have been informed that SB-2 barrels might fit an SB1 frame but isn't always reccomended due to steel composition.  Would a .223 be bad on an SB-1?

Thanks

No way, you're flirting with danger, the .223 was never available on the old cast iron framed H&R rifles, still isn't, H&R1871 wont' fit one to an SB1 frame, read the warning by dieselbuilder in the FAQs and Help sticky under Can I put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame?
on that exact scenario. Be safe and buy an SB2 frame and have a barrel fitted or get a complete rifle, life's too short to make it even shorter trying to save a couple bucks.  ;)

Thanks for the info.  Guess that I will leave well enough alone.  Wasn't worried so much about cost but room in the safe.

The real problem is not the stress on the entire frame, (it is easy to show that a 12 gauge shotgun has more breach thrust than a .223) but that the material the frame is made from will not stand the consentrated thrust on the small area of the .223 case head.  That, and the larger fireing pin on the shotgun frame, make for an unsafe combination.  Larry

If your worried about room in the safe just swap out the SB1 frame for an SB2 frame. You cannot use the .223 Barrel on the shotgun (SB1) frame, BUT. you CAN use the shotgun barrel on the rifle (.223) frame....<><....:)

I have shot my 223 barrel on a shotgun frame but I would not recommend doing it.
I had to bang the gun open over my knee after I fired it.
The primer had flowed back into the firing pin hole and jammed the gun shut.
