New gun in trade
« on: April 17, 2009, 04:39:35 AM »
I pulled a two for one trade this weekend and one of the guns I received was a round butt Vaquero.  This .45 has the usual light marks on the cylinder but otherwise looks unfired.  I know it has been fired, the owner is a friend of mine, but it sure is clean!  The grips are too fat for me and I may mess with them or it may end up as more trading stock.  I like small, compact single actions, but I'd rather they were on the Colt SAA size frame.  I'll play with it a while and then decide.  44 Man

Great lookin handgun .44man! You and I have a weakness I think, short barrelled single actions.

i had the same problem with those birdsheads guns. Grips are to short and to fat. Now the run they made with the short barrel and  regular blackhawk grips is a gun id like to pick up. I think they called it a sheriffs model.

I like these guns....except for the bird's head grip. I think one with a two piece Colt type grip frame would be an ideal trail packin' gun though.

If I were going to 'pack' it, I would want one with the 'New' Vaquero frame (the Montado), or better yet, one of the 3 1/2" barrel 'New Thunderer' Italian guns in .45 or .44 spl.  They would be several ounces lighter to carry.  That's my ideal single action carry gun.  44 Man

44 Man, I had to run down to the safe to make sure that my bird's head wasn't traded to you by accident! The grip could be a bit longer but it is a very good shooter. Mine likes a light touch which lets it roll well in my hand. I considered taking it deer hunting and tried a wide variety of handloads designed for it's full size brother just to convince myself that the short barrel was a no go. In short, the bratty little thing liked everything that I chose to feed it. It was with this gun that I learned that I was one who was fortunate enough to focus a short sight radious as well as a long one with the short barrel being no handicap. This has been quite an argument in past threads as you know.

Some of the heavier handloads that I have tried in this gun were the 900fps 300grainers. That birds head has enough weight that it behaves like a pleasant litte pop-gun when using these. Sometimes if I am too relaxed the hammer can come back and bite the web between my thumb and forefinger but most of the time not. I guess that what I am saying is to give the birds head a chance as you may end up liking it.

Well, I do still have one more aluminum grip frame in the bottem of the box that I could put on it to lighten it up and get a better grip on it.  We'll just have to see......   44 Man

Of all the guns I own, the Birdshead generally gets the nod when I go to the pasture.

BTW, anyone have a set of these black birdshead grips they don't want? Mine got a chunk knocked out of 'em.

Got a brand new unfired Sherriff's Model EMF .45LC case hardened with standard wood grips that I can't seem to give away. I was told no one likes the short barrelled Single Actions ... hmmm. Glad to see there's a fan base out there! I think they're pretty slick; the original CCW.

Nice!
I have been looking at a stainless one just like that at a local shop, pretty good price too. I need to make up my mind before someone else snatches it!
