Merwin Hulbert
« on: March 31, 2009, 04:53:28 PM »
So, I was watching the Godfather Part II again tonight, and as always end up drooling over the couple of MH guns in the movie.

I did a quick search and found out that they are going to start making them again!!!!!!

Im very excited since its my favorite gun that Ive never shot, held or seen in person. That may change, it looks like they are going to make a few versions of them, with extra barrels/cylinders, and make em beefy enough for modern ammo, 45lc .38spl and .357mag.

Just thought Id rant, havent been this excited in a very long time! anyone else have info on these revolvers? Shot and origional?

Kal52,  you mean something like this original 44-40 Frontier Army, most were nickol plated and with a unique type of engraving.  I took a pic of it open that I'll post below.

Turning the barrel 90 degrees and pulling it forward pulled the cylinder forward extracting all 6 cases at once.  This one works perfect, shoots well but not often, as it's valued between $12 and 15,.000.  It would be neat to have a reproduction shooter to play with but even those won't be cheap or even resonable.

That is very very cool. they are supposedly going to have the 2nd gen, and the 4th gen (open/topstrap) models. and have the different style grips, skullcrusher birdshead and the flatbottom.

I personally would love to have a blued version of the pocket army, or two.

I think atm, pre orders are around 1250.00 not cheep but i may just have to save up for one, im sure itll be a year or two before they are in full production.

Hank08, thanks for sharing pics of your MH, they are such a cool gun!

Here are a couple of pictures of my 44-40 Frontier Army. Notice the skull crusher grip. This has been in the family since new and mine since 1979. Although at one time blued, it has turned patina. Has no corrosion at all but does have a broken latch that locks the frame together.

Greg, neat gun but it's not a Frontier Army, It's a 2nd model 7" barreled Pocket Army .44 open top which are fairly rare in 7" and command a premium in value, standard barrel length was 3 1/2"  Also being blue commands a premium as almost all were nickel plated.

I was afraid of that. That website has been up for years and so far that guy has not even produced a prototype. I wouldnt give them any money if I were you. I dont think he even has shop, or has ever produced a firearm. I think he just likes making websites like his save winchester one he had before. Cimarron has considered offering one through uberti, thats probably the best bet right now. I'd like to see a MH repro as much as anyone but really I wouldnt send that guy any money. Good luck

I have one of those nagging regrets from 30 years ago. At a gun show I examined a Merwin & Hulbert pocket model in 44/40 with the folding hammer spur. It looked like the ultimate big bore pocket pistol.  It was nickeled and in very good condition at a very reasonable price.  I had the cash in my pocket, but I had never heard of Merwin & Hulbert.  I thought they probably were in the same class as Hopkins & Allen or Harrington & Richardson, a cheap gun that would be nothing but trouble.  I've since learned that they were finely crafted revolvers and I've been kicking myself for the past 30 years! ;D

I had no intention of sending anyone any money, For that kind of money id have to have it in my hand to examine it before id think of getting one.

I just like the idea of it coming back, they are very cool guns.

Thats cool that uberti is considering it, thanks for the heads up ill keep an eye out for any news.
