7mm rem mag
« on: September 01, 2003, 01:31:30 PM »
I have just purchased the 26 in 7mm rem mag barrel for my encore, I will be hunting antelope in october and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this round, and could recommend me some good factory ammunition to shoot, as ammunition is expensive and I don't reload I need to keep my costs down in my search for a load.

thx

Will

If i was going to shoot Factory loads i would buy a box of Remington Corelokt 150gr bullets.Thats what works for me and is inexpensive. $17.00/20rnds.

I was always partial to Federal Premiums or Winchester Supremes before I started reloading.  But for practicing why not go with the Remingtons.  They are a very accurate cartridge and are probably $5.00 a box cheaper.

Hi Will, thought i would put in my 2 cents worth...make good shoots with the 7mm...my friend was hunting in Montanna and was shooting antelope for a farmer he knew...well they went over and looked at the animal and the farmer started to laugh, and said Gee I think you need a bigger gun..
seems they like to lighter cals for antelope, like the 243...just thought I would add that....ww1

I don't have a 7mm Mag but my 300WinMag really liked the Hornady Custom factory loads.  They don't cost much if any more than the Remington's and they shoot great.  Either 140 or 150gr loads should work just fine (which will be 139gr and 154gr for the Hornady's!!) ... SP or BTSP will be up to you, depending on how far you think you'll need to shoot.  Up to 300yds you won't notice a difference between them.  I prefer flat-based bullets (SP's) since they usually shoot more accurately for me and they will tend to stay together better when they hit game.

Good luck!!  ... Crayfish

I would also have to agree with the Hornady's 139's, excellent combo.  I can not reccamend the Remington's though as I have never been able to produce groups under 2.5" with them in any gun I ever owned including one that was capable of .35" groups.  The Winchesters also seem to very good and from what I understand usually at the distance of 'lopes the Balliistic Tip should be about perfect.

I also shoot the hornady 139 SST. They perform great in that gun. I also have the heavy 26 in.  I topped it with a Leoupold fixed 6 power scope, in my opinion great combo no worries about playing around with the scope.
I do alot of hunting out in Montana myself, you will have a great time. Take care and shoot straight.
