first handi advise
« on: March 16, 2009, 04:31:59 PM »
hello all

i need the advise of you veteran handiholics. i am relativly new to the h&r thing but have definatly caught the bug thanks to the many recommendations  on this amazing website. i have almost turned over my entire modest gun cabinet. the only remaining gun i have left is my remington 870 slug gun. all the rest are h&r. first one added was a 12 ga ush. liked it so much, i got a 20 ga as well ( i am going to have my son use this for his first season this fall). i also added a .17 hmr and am going to get the .22 as well. also looking for the .17 mach2 though i understand they are hard to find. i changed my mind on my muzzleloader as i was going to get a t/c endeavor so i could add barrels. decided i would rather not deal with it. mostly i think so i could get a handi rifle. ( i traded my winchester 30 06 in for t/c triumph). actually, with the money i saved, i could almost but 2.

what i need is advise on which handi to get. so far i hunt only whitetail in wisc and minn. my brother lives in arizona and we are trying to arrange a pronghorn hunt sometime in the future. i do not reload and do not posess the talents ofmany of you with your tinkering. what i want is a no nonsense, hunting accurate with factory ammo, dependable killing rifle. any comments or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

by the way, i wish i had known about these guns/website sooner. awesome guns and awesome people. sure is addicting. thanks

Since you mentioned antelope, I'll second the 25-06! Federal 115gr Nosler Partitions and the Hornady 117gr BTSP both shoot exceptionally well in mine with nothing done to the rifle except shooting it using good Handi-sense, see the Handi Basics 101 sticky.  ;D

For all around use .308 Win or 30-06.
But for deer i would get 308 win (in your neck of the woods I would use Open sights with 180 grain Round nose.)  If you have to have a scope the weaver V7 2.5-7X32
For pronghorn I would look at 243 Win.  they are not very big But would look at a 3-9X38 Weaver V9.  And 90 to 100 grain projectiles

All of the above AND the 7mm-08.  Anything from 243 on up will work for what you want, I like 7mm's of any flavor.  Have taken more game with my 280s, but the 7mm08 is catching up.  Gonna havta blood the 7-30 Waters this year too.  Have fun on the antelope hunt, they are speedy little buggers when spooked.

Many cartridges are great, but not all are always great in a Handi....that is without a little work.
Though for what you are talking about, I second the 25-06 and 280 barrels. The only 26" barrels and they both have a very good rep and some nice velocities out of the longer tube.

Words of wisdom right there!!  I agree!

Everyone the guys mentioned above will work just fine. One more thought, when hunters in the know begin looking for a antelope rifle they measure all of them against the 25/06. It seems to be tailor made for Antelope hunting.
