Why everyone needs a 45-70 - updated
« on: March 03, 2009, 01:02:40 PM »
I thought I'd post this for those who don't understand (if there are any) or those new to the forum who might not know yet.  This is a picture of my example loads (dummy rounds for length I use in my loading, lets me set the press fast) for all the bullets I currently load for my BC.  THey range from 550 grain Crater-2 hard cast T. Rex killers to a 150 gr collar buttons I have used on rabbits.   I figure the 45-70 has me covered from the biggest critter on land today to about the smallest.  All these rounds have shown at least reasonable accuracy (the collar buttons are pretty much 50 yarders, but thats what their for), and most (except the Craters) have preety mild recoils in the rounds I load.  I've thrown in a 30-30 160 gr load on the far left for those of you who might not be familiar with the case size of the 45-70.

It would also be neat to see the projectie next to the case as well.  Show how much of the bullet is still in the case.

That is a nice photo. Since I am a 45-70 fan myself, I decided to set it as my desk top back round, if thats ok.

BROTHER!!!  :o  I thought I was the only one who had to cook for his wife!

We get home about the same time and one evening we walked in, she went right to the couch and sat down, turned on the TV and started watching the news while looking at the newspaper.  I went into the kitchen, brought her a glass of wine then went back and started making us supper.  At one point, looking up from my labors, it dawned on me that something was VERY wrong with this picture!    >:(

Well, not really.   :-\  You never tasted that girl's cookin!   ::)

As requested, here are the bullets alongside the cases. I don't have a 300 gr bullet, its factory (to my shame).

I have never tasted my wife's cooking, since everything I have ever seen her try to cook has set off the smoke detector.

4th from the left is the 420 gr Crater Lite-2 by Jae Bok Young.  He's listed in the FAQ's.  He also made the giant killer on the end.  They are very hard cast bullets with a meplat greater than .38".  Get awesome penetration from both.  Exit wound on a feral hog at 50 yards with the Crater looked like a 12 gauge slug (most of which it out masses).

Greetings,

I too believe that everyone is in need of a 45/70. This photo shows the main reason being the versatility. I am a huge supporter of this round as a varmint round out to whatever range the individual rifle can be accurately shot. This makes mine a 200 yard prarie dog gun !! I have begun to reload a stockpile of 405 gr. medium hot rounds and will soon be stretching it out and see just how far it will hold a respectable group. 300 ? 400? 500? I am aware that few people consider this a long range gun, but if you learn the trajectory, and work hard to develop the skills to place the shot, it is indeed a viable option. Just a thought from a 45/70 owner and lover. God Bless You All.

I couldn't agree more.  The .45-70 in NOT just a 100 yard rifle.  Mine groups at 300 yards as tight as I can hold it.  If I get a flyer, it's pilot error, I know it the instant I touch the trigger.  I just restocked it with a weighted synthetic stock, and I haven't gotten to really shoot it to see if it altered the accuracy.  The weather here has been awful, lots of snow, sub-zero temps and 20 -40 mph wind.........not condusive to shooting :'(

Topper, That T-shirt would work great for some of the threads "round the ol' pot bellied stove".

Like Pete said, you can edit, and just remove the photo :)
