3 1/2 inch 20 gauge ?????
« on: December 21, 2008, 10:58:19 AM »
This was new to me. A friend brought his new slug gun hunting yesterday. It's a NEF Ultra Slug Hunter dELUXE chambered for 20 gauge 3 1/2 inch. His Dad won it in a raffle. They went to Dicks and Gander and both told him that there is no such cartridge. Well there is, they are loaded by Hastings. I think Hastings must be rechambering USHs for them.

Sam,
These slugs are old news, and were discussed here in some detail in March of 2007, and judging from lack of threads about it here, I'd say it didn't fly with the public, like hastings was hoping it would, LOL.

wink_man,
It may of been discussed awhile back, but they were released not to long ago. So they are new to the publice still. I have seen a few guys with them, and they love them. But it is not for me.

Well I searched this forum for these going back 6 months. Didn't think to go back 21 months, that discussion was just about the announcement, no one claimed to have even seen or shot one.  I couldn't find any discussion in the last 6 months when you would expect if they were available. So I wouldn't exactly call it "old news".

Hastings debuted the 3.5" 20 gauge slug @ SHOT 2007.

Here's a link to a company that sells the slugshttp://slugsrus.com/Products/hastings.htm

I've yet to see either the gun/ammo in person.  H&R either sold hastings some USHs that they (hastings) rechambered and were selling for use w/these slugs.  At one time there was talk about TC and maybe Knight rechambering some barrels for these loads as well, but to the best of my knowledge it never happened.

I don't know what the future holds for the load/gun but I can't ever seeing it becoming popular w/out more than one gun chambered for it and only one company producting the load.

But, that's just my opinion.

Our club raffled one off at our Deer Expo last Sunday and it sure looked good.  I didn't win it and I doubt the guy who did will even shoot it.  Darn!  I'd like to see it in action.  It had a really nice laminated stock.

Star1pup, it's probably the one. The guy that won it used to be a member(might still be) of Leetonia SC. He used to own the Sport Shack in Columbiana. His younger son was using it.

Yep.  That's the one.  Bill is still a member of the club, as am I.  Maybe the son will shoot it and let me know how it works.  I've been told that they are accurate out to 250 yards.  Not that we need that distance here in Ohio.  I can take him over to Leetonia's range if he needs a place to try it.  I think East Ohio Shooters Supply has the ammo as that was where we bought the gun.

Joe has shot it enough to sight it in, not sure at what range. I think East Ohio is where he finally found the ammo. He hunted with it Saturday but didn't get a shot.

He brought Bill along a few days, we'd put Bill in a spot that was easy to get to. We put a nice buck and a couple of does past him, he was thrilled just to see a deer.  Bill taught my hunter safety class at Leetonia SC when I was 14. I spent a lot of time hanging out at his shop when I was kid. It was nice to be able to take him deer hunting.

OK,  I read and enjoy your columns when I get a chance to read them. I  don't subscribe to the Journal, but my Mom does and I usually look at her copy.

Back to the original thread, I have seen ads for Hastings in a number of places.  They don't mention NEF/H&R at all, just act like it is their own gun.  I read an article someplace, maybe Fur, Fish Game, describing the cartridge.

Well it is their own gun, sort of. ;)  They buy them from NEF and rechamber them.

Anyone have any knowledge on the cost of the slug gun and the ammo. I use a 3" 870 20 gauge and have killed a lot of deer with it, but would really like to try the Hasteings as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to shoot. If I had an NEF/H&R receiver, couldn't I just buy the Hasteings barrel? Worm

I've seen the guns going for $300-$350 on gunbroker.com from time to time.  Slugsrus.com sells the 3.5" shells for 12.95 per box (plus shipping).

To the best of my knowledge, the barrels are not sold separately to add to an existing receiver.

Thanks for the information Jim. I sort of figured they wouldn't sell the barrels alone. I guess I'll stick with my 3" slugs out of a smooth bore for now. I can at least make 3 shot touch at 50 yards. I've never shot a rifled slug barrel, any idea on the gain in accuracy over a smooth bore? Thanks again, Worm.

It really depends on what you want and/or need from your slug gun.  I typically hunt in thicker areas and a smooth bore will take care of my needs (75 yards or less).  If I hunted over fields were longer shots were the norm, I'd go with a rifled bore and sabots (or a muzzleloader).

I've got one of the H&R's with the Hastings chambered bbl.
The above poster was correct.  The gun is purchased by Hastings and then rechambered.  I got mine for $349.
Haven't shot it yet, so can't give a range report.  I found the 3.5" Hastings slugs online (Midway if I remember correctly).
I fully expect it to shoot well.  I've got the same shotgun with the standard chamber and it shoots everything I've put through it.
