buying a survivor in .308 and maby a .45 colt barrel
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:56:45 PM »
I have on order a NEF Survivor in bull barrel .308 and eventually going to send it in for a .45 colt barrel.
I just joined this forum after being refered here by a gentleman from thefiringline.com. You guys seem to love your handi rifles and be very knowledgable about them. So im wondering are these rifles very good and what are thier strong points or weak points. Do they take long to get shot out or loose? I traded in my Remington 700 30-06 so I hope that wasnt stupid. And I have heard that I might not like the stock can I trade it for the stock on a H & R shotguns stock? I know nothing about these guns so any help is greatly appreciated. I have read the sticky with the tips on it.

You'll find out that the people that like there handies are a little nuts, And like to be. ;D I have never shot loose any of my handies and they have never failed to fire based on the rifle, ammo misfires not counted.  The stock on a handie can be swapped with any other handie with several styles available, If you like to tinker handies are great, If not well that is up to you.  If you can't find the info you want in the FAQs or stickys just ask after some friendly harassemnt and some manditory sarcasim we will give you all the help we can.

+1 to Bob.  The Handis are a lot of fun, and really don't take a lot of tweaking for the most part.  I love all of mine, and they are all shooters.  I got rid of a lot of repeaters and muzzleloaders to buy Handis, and I don't regret it a bit.  I'm just trying to decide what my next will be.......perhaps a .308 Survivor.  I think the Handiest of them all is the .357.  The biggest, deadliest, Hoot ta shoot is the .45-70.
I won't live long enough to wear out a barrel or shoot one loose.  Single shot means slow fire, no heat problems, especially with a bull barrel.

Welcome to the Clan of the Crazy Handiholics.

While you can tinker with a Handi no end, you don't really have to.  They can be a leave it alone 'till you shoot it gun no problem.  Many of us here tinker with them because we want to.  You can do so, or not.

May I ask, are you getting a dedicated 45lc barrel, or the 45/410 survivor barrel?  If you are going to shoot 410 and 45lc, then there is only one option.  If you plan on shooting 45lc only, I would advise the 45lc dedicated barrel.  I have a Survivor in 45/410 (and another in .308, the sickness of accumulation) The 45/410 shoots OK with 45lc, but only OK.  It is after all a compromise design that shoots both rounds well enough, but not outstandingly.  For dedicated solid projectile, the closer chamber of the 45lc only barrel is worth it.

Also, it's worth the small bucks to have them drill and tap it.  I don't know why the 45/410 Survivor doesn't come that way.  It's a natural for a shotgun scope or a red dot, which is what I have.

Another consideration if you want to shoot 45lc as a shorter range rifle and you only plan on shooting 45 not the 410, is to consider 44mag.  44 magnum has more bullet weight options than the 45lc.  While you can load the 45lc up into 44mag performance neighborhood, you can buy 44 mag off the shelf loaded up like no factory 45lc will be.  You still have the option of 44 special for lower noise and recoil and 44 special will work well on many animals at appropriate distances.

I don't mean to confuse your purchase plans, I just want to throw some more info into the pot so you can pull what you like out of it.  Like all free Internet opinions, I guarantee mine to be worth what I charge for it.

  Good luck and welcome.

Thank you all. I didnt see the .45 only option as I would prefer it that way simply because of the chamber being shorter. I am set on .45 because I reload that cartridge and have a .45 ruger blackhawk. I also wonder if that expensive barrel break in is nessecary?

The 45 Colt accessory barrel is part #45LC. Barrel break-in is what you want to make of it, there are some easy steps to take in the FAQSs if you don't want to waste a lot of ammo in the process, or you can just shoot it after a good cleaning and forget any detailed break-in, there are many advocates of both schools of thought.
