.38 Spl in 357 MAXIMUM chambers??
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:28:44 AM »
Has anyone found accuracy less with the short 38 Spl ammo after reaming their 357 Mag chambers to MAX? My .357 Mag is a lot of FUN with 38 ammo. Almost worth paying the tax and costs to install a compensator as I did on my Ruger 10/22. Too much money, though.
I would like to not loose any accuracy if I were to ream this barrel to MAXIMUM, though. I know the Maximum chamber will fire all three rounds, but wondered about the bullet jump and accuracy loss if any.
Thoughts?

Interesting topic on a banned site indicates that a reamed Max is superior to a factory Max as the reaming out of the forcing cone improves accuracy. Dunno what to believe. Personally, I would not change anything on an exceptionally accurate barrel.

I've owned three MAxies, two Handi's and a 15" Encore. Shot beaucoup 38 Spcl out of all of them, and never had any accuracy problems. Could drop a groundhog at 50 yards with less noise than a .22 LR.

I reamed mine to max, and it's accurate with all three.

I shoot more .38 special than anything, and it's as accurate as before I reamed it to max.

Reaming to max takes off so little metal that I think taking that into consideration, and that the round is relatively slow moving and heavy and at the short range you will be shooting any variation would be so slight that it wouldn't be noticeable if there is any.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I have had 2 done from Mag to Max and the accuracy of .38 Specials out of the reamed Max's was great and not adversely affected by the reaming....<><....:)

Mine shoots well enough, not as good as the mags or maxis, but plenty accurate for poping tin cans or such...
