Who here has taken a grizzly? I am asking because I hope to hear from some hunters about the caliber and range, etc of the hunt. Thanks, Charlie

I'm sure some of our Alaska and perhaps Canada residents have and a few handgun hunters posting to the site have. How many of them post to this forum tho I'm not sure.

Here is one of mine I shot this one June 1/08 with my Rem 700 LSS in 375 RUM with 300gr Partitions @ a muzzle velocity of 2775fps.

This was a non-guided hunt we were actually out prospecting when my son & I spotted it.

The bear was facing directly away from us while we snuck up to what we thought was 130 - 150 yards I waited for it to turn slightly and squeezed off the shot as the bear was turned slightly to the right, I was aiming for the right side chest/lungs angling thru the lungs and into the off side front leg.

The bullet hit almost exactly were I had aimed making a 3" hole in the near side ribs took out both lungs made a 5" - 6" hole in the off side ribs then entered and exited the shoulder it ran approximately 75 yards directly into the thickest bush you could imagine before piling up exactly like the pic below.

I had shot it @ 9:15pm and it didn't get dark until 10:10pm so we went back to camp.

I switched rifles to my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with 525gr Beartooth WLNGC's when we started in after the bear the next morning, when we finally found the bear in the thick bush we were amazed at how much bigger it was than what we had thought so I headed out of the bush to where the bear was standing when I shot it and lasered to where I was when I took the shot.

The shot was much further than we had though it at 230 - 250 yards and the bear was about 1/3 larger than we thought it was which is why we underestimated the distance so baddly.

Here are some pic's...

You can see the rib exit and leg entrance holes in this pic.

Fleshing it out.

My taxidermist Wildlife Designs located in 150 Mile House, British Columbia Canada sent a couple of pic this morning of their work in progress on the hide.

The fellow in this pic is 6' 4" tall and weighs around 250lbs.

Steve the owner of Wildlife Designs is 6' tall and is standing on a 42" high table he tells me from the nose to the board just under his left hand is 3'...

The skull measured 24 1/16" and this is an interior grizzly they are not supposed to get this big the guide/outfitter for the area told me that in 35 years of working this area he has never seen a grizzly this big.

We know there was another big grizzly in the area so my son and I both applied and were drawn for another spring grizzly draw in the area again this year so we will be heading back for my son's bear.  ;D

Wow Camp Cook, that is an excellent report from the bush and taxidermist. The pictures are indeed "incredible." Thanks for sharing it. If I was going to be a bear, I'd want to be a Griz. But, I wouldn't want to meet up with the Camp Cook.
