BP BLS-12 12 Ga. 350 gr. XTP Sabot Slug
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:44:43 PM »
Anybody have any luck with these? I've tried every imaginable combination of 3" Cheddite hulls, powder (Clays mostly), roughed up interior of sabot with .50 cal bore brush to improve bullet grip (twist transfer to sabot), even tried thin latex around bullet. Used the BP wad protector. Tried in both Hastings and Encore barrels. No difference in poor accuracy. Lucky to get 2/3 rounds on 8/10 paper at 50 yds. Both guns print Hammerheads in one ragged hole at 50 yards. Both twists are plenty fast enough 1:32 and 1:28.

So why try something else you ask??? Because I was trying to find a better downrange setup and wanted to try the new Hornady 300 gr. FTP in .50 but can't see wasting money on components if I can't get the old reliable XTP to print. Plus sabots have always intriqued me. So if anyone has any great ideas on these, I'm all ears......

I am thinking about trying them in 2 3/4 hulls without the wad protectors as last resort.....
Thanks,
Craig

What do your sabots look like after being fired? Burnt, melted, pedels missing, and a hole in the middle of sabot?

RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I have not heard of anyone having any luck with the 350gr bullets.  I bought some of the sabots but have not had a chance to reload yet.  After seeing all the problems that people are having, I decided to wait and see as far as loads are concerned.  It seems that those who are having any luck at all are using anywhere from .509 to .511 diameter bullets that are at least 450gr.  You need to go out to some of the other websites like cast boollets and shotgun world under the slugshooting and dixie slugs section.

Are you using the componets called for in the loading manual they sell.  I have shot them in my 870 rifled barrel, and they shot very good.  I prefer the DGS because it is 1-1/8 oz slug that is also very accurate.

Just thought I'd post up that a lot of testing is going on right now with BP and hope to have an update soon. Will keep y'all informed as this plays out. Looking promising as well.
