.44 Magnum .430 bore
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:42:45 AM »
Hello Guys:

I slugged my .44 magnum barrel and it measured .430.  Would anyone have some suggestions on bullets and powders to reload for accuracy and hunting?  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dr. J.

There are several jacketed bullet makers that make .430" bullets. Remington and Hornady are just two I can think of right off the top. If you want to shoot cast then you do want a .431" or bigger bullet - they are available too. I have shot Beartooth .4315" cast in mine (2007 model) with satisfactory results. As far as powder, I have had good results from W296; but not as good as Winchester White box 240 grain soft points; which shoot the best in mine. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

I've been shooting 240gn Hornady xtp's over a moderate charge of Win296 in mine with very good results. I made up some light loads with 180gn xtp's over Win231 but havent got to try them yet.

Dr J,
I have a friend with an overbored 44 magnum Marlin, and he finally got it to shoot well with 240gr XTP's over a maximum load of 296.  As noted above, Hornady XTP's are .430 in diameter, and should shoot well in your gun.  My handi rifle measures .431, and 240 grain Winchester factory loads (white box) give me adequate hunting accuracy.  Give them a try.  I pulled bullet and measured it, and the Winchester also seems to be .430 in diameter.  In my gun, full-power loads shoot best, but I'm having trouble finding a light target load that shoots well.  I did just buy some .432 diameter gas-check lead bullets from Montana Bullet Works that are showing some promise.

LaOtto, could you be mixing up remington and winchester?  The 44mag Winchester bullets I have measured seem to be .430, whereas the Remingtons that I have measured seem to be .429.  Or maybe I'm measuring wrong.

My 44 mag has a very smooth bore that also mics out at .430. I sent it off to be rechambered to the 307 winchester case necked up to .44 caliber and i am shooting hornadys 260 gr. soft point and at 100 yards, it will keep three bullet holes touching just about every time out. I had the barrel rechambered because the throat length was rediculously long and the 44 mag accuracy stunk bad/

I think you will be pleased with any of the XTP bullets over appropriate load of H110/296 for hunting rounds.  To shoot paper I find a load of Trail Boss under an 180 gr OT cast bullet is also very accurate and has very little recoil.

murphdog - you are correct - the Remington bullets are .429". I said off the top of my head...another senior moment. :( Winchester bullets are .430" in diameter.

My Winchester M94 Trapper has a .432" groove diameter; I'd trade that for a .430" groove diameter any day of the week!
