lol @ fortress... for some reason i can visualize you crying and smearing JB on yourself :D

Mitch, I'd be leary about having any welds done to the bbl... not only costly, but could possibly change the dynamics of the bbl itself.  I say that b/c there is a LOT of debate about fluting bbls after they've been forged.  Research suggests that it screws w/ the harmonics of the metal.  I would imagine that doing a weld on strong enough to hold could change the properities of the bbl metal.

I would think NEF would share the same concerns if they are tacking the forend stud on cool enough that it falls off later...

Just a thought to consider.

NEF's QC on the forearm studs is just plain bad.  I have removed quite a few of them for stibbing projects, some pop off with the first little tap and some won't come off without taking half of the barrel off with the stud.  They are stuck on with 4 spot welds, probably takes them about 6 seconds to do it and if they don't immediately fall off they call it good enough.  .  Larry

Yeah, but that is still a risky business, especially w/ a standard contour bbl that shoots as well as the one Mitchell has.  One change in the consistancy of the riflings and that bbl is toast.

I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

i had a customer bring one in my shop before this past whitetail season.
with the same failure.
i recommended he go and talk to a friend of mine that does custom welding
from boat tee-tops to 2" iron plate marine transmission mounts.
he also instructs welding at the local vo-tech center.
the customer was frantic about the accuracy of his .308 standard contour
it was less that 2" @200yrds 5 shot group, of course with cool down time between shots.
anyway, it was done and not a .002 difference in accuracy.
i guess it all depends on the experiance and knowledge of the art of bonding two substances together the right way.
and he only charged $30, he also told the customer if it affected the accuracy, he would replace the barrel!!!!.  cool thing is, the welder don't even own a gun and did'nt have a clue about barrel harmonics.
he just knew what had to be and not to be done.
thats a real welder, the kind that can weld-up the crack of dawn to a broken heart.
and don't forget about the windshield wiper thing ;D
but it's all good if you like the jb weld fix, thats just another option

Probably the best "proper" solution would be to silver solder it back on.  This method has been used to attach things to rifle and shotgun barrels for a hundred years and is well proven.  Larry

I have a JB weld question.
I have a 98 Mauser and would like to put on a one piece scope mount, but do not want to drill to ruin rifle.
Also please don't tell me about the no gunsmith mounts, I won't consider those.

Could I JB weld it on?

Will it hold, anyone with experience?

How do I get it off?  I went to JB weld site and they said that you can heat to 600 degrees to loosen.

Reading this thread I was also thinking about silver solder in the event of lug detachment... seems a good remedy. ;)

Some 30 years ago I decided to convert my 158 H&R Topper 12 gauge to a short-barreled slug gun for deer.

I cut the barrel to 19.5 inches. Then, I took some adjustable sights I had removed from a rifle when installing a scope on it. I used JB Weld to attach the sights to the top of the 12 gauge. It worked then and is still working today.

I've also used JB Weld to attach an extended tip on the top of the front sight of another gun when I couldn't get enough adjustment out of the factory sights. It also has worked quite well.

If the lug stud on my forearm ever fails, I would not hesitate to use JB Weld on it.
