Orphan followed me home
« on: March 22, 2011, 03:06:56 PM »
Hi All

Well I was at the gun shop the other day and I ran across this little number:

Remington 81 in 35 Remington

Bore is awesome and in overall real good condition

Once I got it home I cleaned it and discovered

ITS A TAKE DOWN MODEL!

Take off the fore end and it has the little take down gismo.  Takes down to just over 22" long.

Got it for $350 out the door.

I dont really know much on these.
Did I do ok pricewise???????????

See ya

Thou shalt not covet... Ahem...I think all M8's and 81's come apart that way.Could be wrong though, I've only seen a couple of them and that was the way they came apart.

All the 8s and 81s are takedowns , as are the 14s , 141s and 25s .  Remington made all their old guns that way , even the .22s . !

It appears to be in great shape and all original so I would say you did real good on the price. I was just looking at some 81s for sale online and some of them were more than twice as much. I think the .300 Savage models go for more, like this one..........
http://www.gunsamerica.com/929219845/Guns/Rifles/Remington-Rifles-Modern/Other/REMINGTON_MODEL_81_300_SAVAGE.htm

I have a .300Sav. that was a project gun I bought for 165.00 some years ago. The blueing was fine but the stock was in bad shape. After filling in the gouges and refinishing, it looks and shoots great. I really like the nastalgia of the 8s and 81s and one of my favorite calibers is the .300Sav. They are as heavy as an anvil though.   :D

Keep your eyes open for a rear reciever mounted peep sight and you'll REALLY have something then!

The Marble R6 and Lyman and 1A AT and 2A AT are the only 3 versions that do not require more than the factory tapped hole in the back of the receiver. Lyman made a 41R but that mounted to the side of the reciver with 3 holes. The Redfield 102N requires 1 extra hole, a Williams requires 2 more in the back of the receiver. Another type of Williams requires 3 in the left side of the receiver. King made a peep sight similar to a Lyman or Marble that used just the factory hole but they are rarer than hens teeth. I've never seen one except in a book. Best bet if you don't want extra holes is a Marble or Lyman. They go for about $100 to $125 on E-Bay. Make sure they include the mounting screw, the sight is worthless without it.

I finally broke down and bought a new camera. So here is my 'project' M-81 Woodsmaster in .300 Savage and a picture of one broken down. It had an old ventilated recoil pad on it when I got it, so I replaced it with a Pachmayr Decelerator.........FUN GUNS!

I like the way they look too Swampman. I think it's that 'John Browning' design thing like on all his guns. Like the Auto 5 shotgun, the M-37 Ithaca, the 1911 and the Highpower. All neat looking guns! To me anyway...........
