trying to buy a handi
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:38:39 AM »
Three weeks ago I went out to buy a handi rifle in 270. I went to 10 gun shops in and out of my (i put 200 mi on my odometer) area and called one about 50 miles away up state.
There were none available in stock but they could order me one. I finally broke down and tried to ordered one. Distributors had none available and one said Remington deliveries were spotty on the H&R and could not say when the next order would arrive.
Tim have you any information on this ?Is this a wide spread problem or just in my area ? I live in southern Newhampshire and
Used handies are almost non existant except ones in .243 (a handi caliber I already have).

In my ramblings around gunshops in the Middle Tennessee area on Friday last, I saw at least 6 or 7 used and/or new Handi's for sale. Everything from 22 Hornet to 30-06. Don't remember seeing a .270. And, like you said, there were several .243's.
I wasn't able to make it to the gunshow in Nashville this weekend due to a family emergency, but I have always seen a dozen or more there.
Maybe ya'll need to move down here with usens.

Welcome aboard Tony!  ;) I checked a few big dealers that stock lots of Handis, none had any 270s, so your experience locally seems to be the norm right now, the 270 isn't one of H&R most popular chamberings, and the closure of the Gardner plant and move to Ilion stopped production for a while and they only produced their most popular chamberings when they did start back up. But now that they've made improvements in manufacturing and have things getting back to normal, they should be making more of those chambering that have been hard to find, hang in there, I'll see if I can find out when the next run of 270 barrels is scheduled.

I just sent you a PM with the address and phone number of a store here in Texas that had a new 270 as of a couple of weeks ago.

tonyd2, welcome aboard and nice to have another New Englander on the site. Go the the Kittery Trading Post website and check their used and new gun section. Just google KTP used guns or KTP new guns. In each of those 2 screens/sections (new guns, used guns) check into both "H&R", caliber "any", action "any", and "New England Firearms", caliber "any", action "any" and you should come up with a few guns to choose from and for a decent price for our area, and close to you as well...best of luck and visit this site often, you are among friends here....<><....:)

I checked KTP used guns, no 270 and they don't list new guns, they just ask you to call em when you click H&R or NEF in shop by brand.  :-\

Whittaker Guns usually has a bunch of new and used H&Rs in stock, they're another good one to check, they might still be closed due to the ice storm tho.

Another thing you might try is buy another rifle that can be fitted with a .270 barrel and try to get a used .270 barrel from the classifieds on this site....<><....:)

Welcome Tony from another New Englander. I'm in NH just north of the Ossipee Mountains. Riley's is a nice gun shop. I haven't seen too many .270 Handi's lately either but judging from everyone else's opinions around here you will love the 45-70.

Another really nice gun shop if you're ever out that way is Alstead Gun Shop which is on route 123 heading toward Vermont. They usually have Handi's in there. If you're ever up in the north country check out Village Gun Store in Whitefield. They have Handis for really good prices. Last time I was there a few weeks ago they had Buffalo Classic and a 45 Long Colt Carbine.

Congratulations tonyd2, you have started off with the flagship of the fleet, the 45/70. I started that way myself years ago when I saw a Handi in 45/70 in Old Town Maine that a successful bear hunter had used and swore by. Not much better for New England deer and bear. There is a SS .270 barrel in the classifieds right now but it is pretty expensive. Keep your eyes open and you should be able to pick up a nice .270 barrel in the classifieds here for $100 or a bit under if you get lucky....<><....:)

I'm guessing you'll like that 45/70.  If you're still itching for the .270, I saw one on gunbroker.com.  It's a stainless with the synthetic stock.  Just do a search for 'handi rifle'.  Have fun.

Hello from Tuftonboro Tony. You've come to the right place for Handi's. Good to see a NH group forming up! I look at the Ossipees out the back window. My best, Guy

Guy, I'm close to the Ossipees myself, I can see the top of the old Mt. Whittier Ski area out my front window when the leaves are off the trees. I'm on the northeast side in Tamworth.

Tony, Good choice on the 45-70. Its a Handi-Must-Have!!
I have a Buffalo Classic, and just recently bought a 270 barrel in the classifieds here.
Now I've just got to get to the range and see how my "270 Classic" Frankenstein will shoot :)

$280.00 is a steal for a BC!!  Wish I was able to pick that one up...  I see a 45-120 in my future... just not the immediate future :(
