What do I do?
« on: February 05, 2009, 05:28:14 AM »
Today I am picking up a '96 Cow-a-sock-ee Ninja 250 for free. A guy that works for me bought it used last year and has only rode it once. he said that it scared him. So he just want to get rid of it and is giving it to me. So here is my question. Do I put tires on it(really needs them), tag it and ride it for a year, or do I sell it and use the money and go buy another gun? The only the that I am going to be out is whatever money i spend on it to tag, register, and insure it, and put tires on it. Thanks for the help.

That thing will get some great mileage.  I'd ride it.  Tires can be had online for cheap.  They aren't hard to change.

At that price even I would take a Kawasaki and invest in tires. Gas could go back to $4.00 a gal. make a great ride to work! Won't ride my harley to work to many thiefs.

Those 250 cows are pretty good bikes I'd put tires on it and ride it, they get fair MPG and are easy to insure.

Ride it till it pukes and give it to someone else.

if you put the tires on it and then later decide yu dont want to ride it, since yu got it for free, yu will still sell it for a profit.so yu really win either way.if gas does go back up yu may be glad yu got it ooooorrrr the value of it will go up also with the high gas price. yu win either way dude.

Thanks guys. I got it home and after playing with it for a while( at 11:30 at night) I got it running again. Had to jump it off my truck and the gas smells like it has been in it for at least a year but I got it to idle on its own. I think that I am going to get tires and ride the thing. Thanks again. And Mirage, I don't think my wife would let me trade for another wife. Just a gut feeling.

The guys that I know who ride them (even the more powerful ones) claim that they handle great (should as they are not far from being track bikes) as long as you keep your RPM's in check. 4k or below is more than generous for the City streets but if you exceed this, it is time to hang on!

Not my choice (hate crotch rockets) but they supposedly DO ride and handle darn good.  Very economical too.  A very good starter bike for the right person.  Get some decent (not cheap junk) tires, get it road ready and in in the spring when ppl start thinking bikes, put it up for sale.  Don't be greedy since there's so little $ into it.  I'd proberly send some prfit the way of the guy that gave it to you for free to just as a kind gesture.  Karma ya know.

Well I decided to keep it. Yesterday I pulled the carburator apart as it wasn't idling right. Turns out that both of the vacuum values were torn. So I went to the Kawasaki dealer here in town, and ordered both of them. $131 a piece. Ooch!!! And I found OEM Dunlop tires for a good price, $71 for the front, $81 for the back. I'm going to finish putting it back together and ride the thing as I don't have a lot of riding experience. I have always liked the way the sport bike feeled and handled. The bike is quite comfortable. I plan on learning to ride on this and trying to get a Buell about this time next year.

I really like the Buell.  If I could have 2 the Buell would be my other bike.  I think you've made a wise decision.

Why, thank you Swampman. I'm glad that somebody else also likes them. I have never seen the need to go 120 mph+ on a bike. That is what everybody around here that is riding the sport bike seems to want to do. I like the handling of a sport bike better than a what you get on a cruiser. Plus being a machinist, I prefer to by American made machinery, for the simple fact that by doing so I keep people like myself employed. That and I can make just about anything that I would ever need and or want, and not have to buy it at the overpriced dealerships. That and metric nuts, bolts, and threads suck to remake.
