If you had to choose
« on: February 01, 2009, 08:10:10 AM »
I got clearance from the war department to go ahead with the purchase of another piece of artillery.  Here is the dilemma.  I need to choose between these two,  any suggestions?

I would make a decision fast, before "The War Department" decides to spend the money on something useless like perfume and shoes or something.

Get the parrot. Kind of get in on the ground floor. You would get # 2. I like the lines of the parrot more than the French 75. Just my thoughts, tho.

The Parrott was really a muzzle loader.  The Frenchman was really a breech loader.

Spuddy,   Nice to hear from you!  It's always best to consult with the "war department" BEFORE purchase of any ordnance.  Not planning an invasion of Canada, are you?  That's been tried before via the Kennebec River.  Didn't work out too well.  Well my 2 cents is to go with the Parrott, but if former President, Harry Truman were still with us, he would definitely give the French 75 a nod, given his WWI experience
as a U.S. Artilleryman, a French 75 Battery commander.  Is it really true that Moose will come out of the woods to drape themselves over the hood of a car that's still warm from a recent drive on those particularly cold winter nights in northern Maine?

Yup -

You've GOT to get TWO -

His and Hers.

Either two of a kind or one of each!

(it's a start - 6 cannon in a battery)

Both look great. Parrot has fantastic lines.

I think that's the starting course with a sweet French treat in the summer.

Both are nice, but I'd give the nod to the Parrott! Personal choice being in your corner, don't let the chance pass by, grab one! My "War Department" usually has a budget and a hidden time limit! BoomLover

I just opened the box and put my Dom 75 together yesterday.

I went with it because I've always wanted a more modern looking cannon; I already have Civil War ones. I don't think anyone else does a French 75, and certainly not at the reasonable prices Dom makes them for. The recoil mechanism is what really sold me on it.

Either way, you'll be happy with Dom's products. I've got two from him so far, and I'll be buying more. I doubt there's another maker out there who provides more for the money.

Thanks for the input!  I am going to go with the Parrott.  We are planning a trip to Gettysburg this summer and my kids (and I) are looking forward to seeing some that are full scale.

Mike and Tracy,  I am not planning on invading Canada, although where I shoot my Dom dictator is only three miles from the border.  No moose draping this winter yet.  I am going to be in Denver the second week of March.  How far from Denver are you located? The attached pictures show part of my firing range along with some of the local wildlife.

Tim,   You and your kids will enjoy Gettysburg, there are so many interesting things to see and do and you are welcome here at any time for a deluxe tour.  We are about 20 miles north-west of Denver, Colorado and have no plans for March at this time.  Thanks for posting those great photos.  Beautiful country and one of the most interesting creatures in North America.  If you enjoy your Dominick-made Parrott half as much as RocklockI, Gary does, you will have a smile from ear to ear every minute you're with it.

Regards,

Well, I'll just toss out my 2 cents. I would go with which ever is more costly. Since, you like them both. This way when you have to go back to the "War Department" which means, "Wives are Right" (just incase she walks by).;D You can say... Look Honey, This one cost less than the last one....

Now you know how I'm "intoodeep". Anyway, I'm sure you will enjoy your new toy from Dom!

Spuddy,

I would buy the French 75 cannon.

That one is unique, Everyone has a Civil War gun.

Maybe Dom will make you a breach loader!
Can't hurt to ask.

The Parrot needs a nice set of wooden wheels
to look it's best.

I'd hook it (Frenchy) up behind the lawn mower as an incentive
to mow.

It'll impress the neighborhood kids, young
and old with your firepower.

A freind, now passed, had a cannon on rubber tires
that he towed with the car.

That drew much attention, sometimes from the men in blue.

Thank you for your opinions everyone.  I decided to go with the Parrott.  I spoke with Dom about building a 1/3 scale (GB) Union version.  The confederate one that he did for Gary has has been the inspiration. I hope Dom will post pictures of the progress.
