.454 Casull-loads for heavy bullets?
« on: August 10, 2003, 09:21:37 AM »
I'm having fun playing with my .454 Casull in my 12" Encore, but I'm having trouble finding load data on bullets over 300 gr, especially over 330 gr.  So far I've been educated guessing on my heavy bullet loads with some input from sources, but does anyone know of any confirmed data for heavy bullet loads?  I'm understandably a little nervous about using loads that haven't been tested in other guns, and at known pressures and velocities, Steve's reloading pages have a few loads, and loadswap.com over at Beartooth carries some stuff, but is there anything more out there or am I hitting unpublished territory?  The bullets are all cast, all from Lloyd Smale at this point, love those bullets Lloyd!  Any help I can get is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Selmer

http://www.handloads.com/

They didn't have a lot of data but maybe it's a few you haven't tried.

How Heavy?

I fired a friends Ruger Five shot conversion today with 420gn LBT LFNs, the data sheet said 26.0 H-110. The chrono said 1500fps from the 4 5/8in barrel, I said "where are your bandaids?" while stuffing a used bandana on the wound under a ball cap!

I know you can heat the .454 up more but 30gr of WW296 pushes a 340gr WFP @ 1534 fps from my Raging Bull. It's more than enough for anything walking.

Get the Hornady reloading manual. It looks more like a thick magazine than a book, goes for under $10. It has quite a few loads for heavy .454 bullets, up to 400gr. I have used up to 420gr bullets in mine; they penetrate like crazy.
