Doing some research on a Savage 16FSS??

Any pro's/con's you would like to mention.

I am wanting a 223 or 22-250 that's not too heavy that I can hunt varmints with.

Own the 22-250 version, likes 55 grn Win Bt's alot, it's a nice shooter as are all Savages.

My father in law has a 116 weather warrior series in 30-06.  It has the hinged floorplate and it's a great shooter.  You won't be disapointed with the gun.

Nipp,

My suggestion would be to get the FCSS or FHSS instead of the FSS. The FSS has the old style stock and the old wing style bolt release mounted up by the right side of the receiver. The new FCSS and FHSS will have the new AccuStock and the new bolt release that is mounted in front of the trigger guard. The prices for the FCSS and FHSS appear to be only a few dollars more, and you might have to wait a little bit before Savage starts circulating these new models, but I think the wait would be well worth it for just the new improved stock alone since the old stock seems to be the biggest complaint about the synthetic stocked Savages. Just my opinion.

The bolt release location doesn't bother me, but any improvement in the stock would be greatly appreciated. I've thought about re-stocking mine with a laminate thumbhole.

I agree Hunt-m-Up, I can deal with the bolt release too, but that stock is another matter altogether.

I'll also admit that I've thought about one of those stainless 30-06's in a grey laminate thumbhole stock.  I've seen pictures of rifles like that and they're incredible.

The gray laminate looks good on the stainless.. But it will add some weight to it.
