Scope Ring Question- Just received New 44 Mag Handi
« on: January 24, 2009, 04:19:12 PM »
Hi all,
Just received my new 44 mag Handi, was about to mount my old 4x Weaver on it, realized the rings I have seem to be to small to fit the base (can't remember what rifle I used to use these rings on, the base is what came with the handi), anyway what are some ring recommendations (I have read the faqs already, would like some of your opinions as to what you have and like). I have already put the hammer spur on and went to put the rings on but too small to fit the base. Also, the base seems nice and straight and hear H & R uses thread locker already, anyone see any need to take these loose? I have blue loctite I have used on other scope jobs, but don't want to fix what is not broke. Also would you suggest a medium height ring to ensure hammer clearance or does it not matter so much? Please advise as it seems I need to go to the store!! The Weaver is just a 1 inch dia 4x fixed scope. Can't wait to shoot this thing, even my wife likes it. Was thinking of Winchester 240 grain JSP's I just saw at Wal-Mart :). By the way my trigger pull does not feel heavy really, actually is not too bad (I don't dry fire but just hold the hammer with my thumb). Serial is CAC which I think means made in 2008. First overall impression is nice rifle for the money. We will see when I shoot! Thanks!

I have a 4x Bushnell on my 44 mag Handi. I use medium height Weaver rings from Wally World and it just clears the hammer.

Weaver style medium Burris Signature Zee Rings with the inserts.
These rings hold for me and have never failed.

Several places online sell them cheaper than the prices listed on the link.

I'm using high Leupold qrw rings.  The scope I'm using has a big eyepiece and required the use of high rings to clear the hammer.

BTW,  I tried the Winchester white box ammo and it didn't shoot real well out of my .44 (but all guns are different).  I've had my best luck with Fiocchi jsp and Hornady leverevolution ammo.  The fiocchi ammo shot really well.

Sounds good. That 4XWeaver is a nice compliment to that caliber and gun!!

Generally, I would agree with that statement. But knowing what I do about these things. There is much to-be said about piece of mind as well. For the minimal hassle of removing a couple screws and than reattaching. KNOWING with out a shadow of a doubt that they are done right and are tite, is worth the effort.

I do not have this scope to say for sure. But it sounds like Spanky's is close. With out seeing, I too would think Med Weavers would fit fine. Burris ZEE's are better if you need to purchase them anyway. Many here really like them. Personally my first choice is the Leupold PRW rings. I have also recently succumbed to Tim's proding and favorable proclamations about the WARNE Maxima line of rings. These too are excellent and slightly cheaper than the costly Leupold's.

Try a couple different loads to find the right one. Everygun is different and likes different loads. Like JJas just said, he found the Fiocchi ammo to be SUB MOA from his new 44mag Handi!!

Good luck with your new "toy"!! Be sure you come back and post up how she shot.

Hey all, thanks for the info and tips. I picked up some Leoupold rings at Wal-Mart (we'll see how it works out) and have scope mounted. Now just need to pickup some ammo. I have seen one gentleman who had excellent results with Fiocchi 240 grain JSP ammo, may give these a try, I also plan to try Hornady Leverevolution and Hornady XTP 240 grain (or maybe 200 grain, not sure which would shoot best, have to shoot it to be sure). Anyway, I am tore up and can't wait to go squeeze this thing off. Most of my shots where I hunt now are 50 yards or less so it is up close. If I am in an area where I might have a long shot 150 yards or more, I will use my trusty 25-06 (love this cartridge too, have taken most of my deer with it, no escapees  :). Now just need to find ammo and get a decent semi warm day. Will keep you posted of course.
