Getting out of the Handi business
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:43:38 PM »
Hey guys and gals gonna be getting out to the handi business for a while.  My 45/70 is sale pending and will probably have a 223 barrel for sale soon.  Company I work for cut hrs and well long story short looks like we are involuntarily moving  :)  The collection is getting reduced.  As soon as I know what is going on with the 45/70 I intend to post in the correct section of this forum for the other barrel.  Just wanted to give everyone here a heads up seeing as how you have answered all my silly questions for me in the past.  Thanks again and good luck.

Sorry to hear about this.  I'm seeing alot of this in my job, have new people asking for help or people that got on their feet years ago coming back in for assistance.  Keep checking in and when you get on your feet again, the Handi's will be back too.  DP

I expect a lot of us are going to be trying to sell some of our accumulated stuff to get thru this year and those to come. I suspect tho that those who wait too long to move it will find no market as there just won't be enough left with enough money to buy. I've been delaying listing some of my stuff I really never use anyway and need to stop procrastinating and just do it while folks still have enough money to be in a buying mood.

If they keep printing money willy-nilly, the money won't be worth much.  The guns and stuff may be more valuable as barter items than cash items.

My boss has been tapping his personal funds and retirement just to keep us open for a while.  Can't go on forever......We've had so many industries leave the US and go overseas.....Our wealth was in our manufacturing, and we've sent it elsewhere.  I've noticed even some of our US military issue gear is made over the water now, and I thought there was a law against that.

I pray we will overcome this and be a stronger people in the end, but its going to be a long hard road if so.

I was up at the Kittery Trading Post in Maine a few weeks back to pick up a rifle I had just purchased from Track of the Wolf and had had shipped to Kittery (use them for my FFL),,........anyway, Kittery is a buyer and seller, they buy and sell a LOT of guns and many I know have bought and sold guns for over 40 years with Kittery, again, anyway....the stuff that was being offered up for sale  from fellows who were (I assume) trying to raise some fast cash was very nice.  Some really nice items just while I was doing all the paperwork.

The prices being paid by Kittery were LOW.....VERY LOW, and still many many simply took the price offered and they sold.......sad, honestly I felt very sad but in a way it was scary.  I don't know......scare just thinking about all that value being lost, and in a way watching a sort of economic disarmament of these people.  Too many things going on here that don't add up in this economic crisis.....and I get a bit "weird" about some of it.  Seen all that value just disappear at the time this generation was just about to begin using it.......;  Like I said I get just a bit weird about the timing.

I'm on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is vastly different than the Lower.  We never had high tech, high paying jobs up here.  The big employers are the utilities, hospitals and State and local governments.  Most of us farm, log, or have small businesses.  Our area is always depressed, and jobs are scarce, but the havoc happening in the lower due to the failing auto industry hasn't touched us much.  We're not too much poorer than we used to be.  Of course, the falling dollar hits us all.

I hope and pray it will turn around and all of you get back to sucessful, rewarding jobs.

The best of luck,

Pete

Times are tough and they're gonna get tougher.  Obama's stimulus package is a joke,  the money should have gone to the tax payers.

I know that for sure everythings seems to be being drank up by a giant quicksand.
I too was in a gun shop and a guy while I made a purchase was sellin 3 guns all seem to be new a 7mm-08,
12 ga. and a .22 mag rifle, guess what he took for all 3 ?? What I just paid for my 1 gun -$275 !!! :o
I about choked :o . If I'd a known he was gonna take that for all 3 of his guns, I'd a ripped him outside and givin him $300 ! Theres {to me} needin cash & a need for stupidity , I would have walked out with guns in hand and sold them in a want ad or something instead of taking what he took. Crazy Crazy !

Im 40 y/o & have a descent job. Lay offs are always a possibility. It seems that by the time I could afford any gun or hunting gear that I would want. This economy crisis hit. 30 to 40y/o are gonna be the generation that loses its toys. Now there isnt a gun in my safe that is worth more say a weeks pay & Ive got a 15 y/o boat. That I could only afford to use a few times this year. Last year I had to take 2 long guns to the gunshow & dump. I got descent money for them. I dont think I could do that today. Its definetly a buyers market. But like GB said soon there will be no one looking to buy. Not sure what Im getting at All we can do boys is try & hold on to what you have ,feed the babies, & keep the house heated. Were in for a long hard road. I dont see any light at the end either. Dont take guns to a gun shop to sell. Sell them here, When you get an offer, you can at least think about it. If its a handi ,theres a good chance it will come back in your direction eventually :D
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I agree times are gonna get tougher.  Sold the 223 barrel to Jamison and he has talked me into keeping the 45/70 a little longer.  Gonna keep fighting the good fight and if I die trying at least I tried  :D  Besides food get scarced I can line up two or three deer and a hard cast bullet should do the trick ;D  Thanks again

Things are tough down here in the south too.  I got laid off back in november and had to move 100 miles for work.  My current job seems to be pretty stable in this recession.  I got a call for a job back home this week, but I think I'm going to stay put and ride it out here for a while.  The chemical plant I worked for laid off about 80% of its work force by the end of december.  I can say I was lucky I was one of the first to go and jobs were more available.  I don't see getting laid off again any time soon.  I had to sign a year contract and they are sending me to california next month for training.  I wish you guys the best that are going through the same thing I went through.  I know it can take a toll on your nerves especially if you have a family to take care of.  Luckily for me I'm the only person I have to worry about.
