Report on my new TIKKA
« on: December 25, 2003, 07:22:51 AM »
Well my new TIKKA is a T3 Lite in 30-06.  I topped it off with a Elite 4200 2.8x10x40.  First I must say I really like the scope!  This from a huge Leupold fan.

The Tikka had one problem I noticed right off.  The barrel wasn't free floating.  I removed the stock a noticed it was binding bad.  I broke out a Dremal and worked on the stock and quickly fixed that problem.

I bought a couple of boxes of Winchester 165 gr Power points.  I wanted to break in with the cheap stuff.  After ten shots I was ready to hunt!!!

I finished both boxes and right now the gun is shooting a little less than one inch.  I'm sure I can get better with hand loads.  So, I must say that this TIKKA is a good value in a rifle.

Other than the stock not fitting correctly the rifle is great.  I would say it is by far the best value in a hunting rifle I have ever owned.  I know I don't have a listory with this rifle but time will tell.  Yep, add one more to the list of TIKKA lovers on this web site!!!!

:D Congrats on your Tikka! I have a 2002 Tikka SS/Syn in .243 and it is capable of one hole groups if I can hold my end up. I did a "one holer" the 2nd 3 shots out of the barrel.

I haven't seen a T-3 yet and am curious?

The 4200 Elite is measureably better quality than the 3200 and well worth the extra 100$. Mine is sharper than my Leupold Vari-X IIs...very close to an Vari-X III. I have one on a custom stocked Sako FinnBear 30.06 that drives tacks all day with 150 gr Nosler Ballistic tips.

Thanks,
I never shot the Tikka until after I fixed ths stock so I can't say that it would have had any accuracy problems.

I was kinda bumbed about the stock but it wasn't a big issue with me.  I just couldn't pass the dollar bill down the barrel.  It didn't take long to fix so it wasn't a real big problem.

For me number one issue in a rifle is accuracy and second is the feel and the gun fills both of those without any problems.

Merry CHRISTmas folks!

I must say that I own a few Tikkas (all of which are the WH models, not the T3s), and I have never had a problem with the stock binding against the barrel.  Sounds like a fluke of sorts.  Still, I'm glad you have it free floating now - that's one reason, in part, why the gun is so accurate.

As for the scopes, if you go to the "optics" section of this site, you will see that the Elite 4200 is one of our favorites.

Recoil isn't bad at all and I'm shooting 165gr to boot.  I think I'm going to reload with 150 but I'm doing that because I have a ton of 30 cal 150gr.

Still I think my little TIkka is going to be my daily shooter.  For the money it's hard to beat

I did pay a little too much for the scope at Midsouth Shooter Supply.  While Midsouth is very good on reloading prices, scopes are a little higher.  I should have tried some of Graybeards sponsors because D&R and The Optic Zone has good prices.

I think my next gun will be a Tikka in 308.

Tikka T-3 Disappointment
« Reply #8 on: December 28, 2003, 07:02:07 AM »
Well, I guess I am not as happy with my T-3 and I haven't even shot it yet. I just got through running my inventory of .30 cal bullets through my Stoney Point chamber All and found the throat is really long. I cannot get Hornady 165 SPBT's to have more than 0.210 into case which is not my optimum reloading scenario. I prefer one bullet diameter in case and 0.010 off lands as general rule of thumb. The Hornday 165 SP was close so it may work OK. The 180 Hornady SP was OK but the Nosler 180 BT or Part did not meet the diameter rule that I prefer. It is perfect for Nosler 200 Accubond but the rifle in 300 WSM was purchased with 165's in mind. I try it to see if 0.025 off lands will work but I was really surprised with the long throat. I usually carry my Stoney chamber all with me before I purchase any rifle to double check the throat but on this one I didn't..... I see the 300 WSM as opimum for 165 and 180 gr bullets. Anything heavier and the 300 WM takes over easily in performance. Anyway, my 0.02 on Tikka so far. Oh yeah, the trigger was at 5.5 lbs out of box. I was able to get it down to even 3 no trouble which was a plus after all said and done. I will post up with range results once I get some loads going.

Agree with your caliber in case and .010 off lands also and feel the 300WSM was made for 165gr bullets myself. Have you shot your gun yet? What is recoil like? My Savage was unbearable with the factory stock and 180's. The 165 hornady inner-bonds were nice and long and may be one to look at for your guns long throat.

The Tikkas are one of the most accurate out of the box guns out there and seem to be building a stronger following all the time. I would like to own a Tikka and a Howa to wring out and enjoy. So little time and so many good guns yet to try.
