44 mag with h4227

i have an nef 44 mag and am loading a barrys 240 grain swc with 20.0
of h4227 and wlp primers and get 2" groups at 100y but alot of unburned
power . is there anything that might help?

Hows your crimp? A firmer crimp should help.

 Also drop back a bit on the powder chg and switch to a MAG primer. Then work back up.
 
Lil yellow, "deposits" (Not completely burned powder)are common with this and 2400 powder.

thanks CW ill try that . the residue is black.does that mean its too much podwer?

Sounds like typical 4227 residue.  WLP primers are what I use in several of my 44 mag loads, including the H4227 loads. 

I agree with CW on the crimp.  Gotta have a good crimp.  Make sure you seat the bullet in one step, and apply the crimp in another. 

Trying to crimp a bullet when you a pushing it down in the case is like trying to button your pants before they are pulled all the way up.  Just doesn't work right.

Most of my straight wall pistol cartridges are crimped using the Redding profile crimp die.  It works well for me. 

I don't have my load data available here at work, but from memory, you are within a grain or so of my favorite 240 grain 44 mag load.
