Pallet wood refinishing
« on: January 10, 2009, 08:25:46 AM »
I know allot of folks here have refinished their Handi's with the pallet wood stock. What type of finish are most of you using? Oil or polyurethane? Thanks, Charlie

Charlie

I've found that Tungoil works very well , it comes in flat , satin and gloss finishes , does a real nice job of waterproofing the wood and brings out the grain nicely .

It does however take some time to apply as it needs to be done in light coats and allowed to completely dry between coats .

I used Tru Oil to finish my 223 Bull Barrel. 22 coats. Most people don't have the patience
to do a finish like this, but to me it is worth the effort.

Tim -- Thank you so much for the kind words!!

Charlie -- As you can see from the terrific photos, Robert took the time to apply and rub down 22 coats of Tru-Oil, which resulted in a spectacular gloss finish. I personally prefer a matte final finish, and so did not re-apply Tru-Oil after the last rubdown with four-ought steel wool. If the surface is too rough for you at that point, you can buff it to a semi-matte sheen with a clean, rough shop rag.

Robert -- That is the prettiest Monte Carlo Handi I have ever seen! Now, I imagine it shoots even better than it did before!

DB22,
Thank you for the kind words as well. It took me 1 month to lay down the finish on that rifle.
I like a glossy finish like this, but not everyone does. It is a real labor of love to finish a gunstock
like that. Tru Oil is pretty durable too. I finished my M48 Yugo Mauser with glossy a Tru Oil finish
like this too. Lately I have been using boiled linseed oil or BLO to finish my gunstocks. It is
different than Tru Oil. It won't protect the wood quite as well as Tru Oil does, but it turns out
real nice. I do what they call an oil scrub with the BLO using 0000 steel wool. It leaves the
wood with an incredible smooth velvet like finish. I plan to finish my next Handi Pallet wood
stocks like this. And by the way that 223 Handi does shoot real good. Always well under
1" at 100 yards.

I stumbled on it by accident, but clear PVC pipe cleaner takes the old stain and varnish off right now.  Seems to leave the grain open and ready to work with.  I bought an '06 used Handi that had what looked like construction adhesive drippled on the stock.  I tried the PVC cleaner, and it took everything off, and it refinished easily.

I refinished an old savage once and I used tru oil and had great results with it.  9 coats later it shined like a new penny,  wish I still had it.  Good luck,  Chris

I used spray, satin Minwax polyurethane and Red Mahogany on mine.

Then I discovered tung oil.  I did a lot with tung oil finish.  But, as I discovered deer hunting this year, zippers and other things will scrape a tung oil finish a lot easier than a poly one.
This is tung oil on a Mosin Nagant:

For a rifle that was never saturated with cosmoline then I would probably used polyurethane.  I don't care for Truoil as it is.....plasticky.  No offense to others' rifles.

Like I said before. Tru Oil doesn't appeal to everyone. There is something to be said for BLO
or Pure Tung Oil. They really let you feel the texture of the wood, where as a poly finish like
True Oil or others will offer more protection and durability. Here are a few different rifles I did
with an oil scrub BLO finish and one I did with Tru Oil. Although I like both finishes in their own
ways, right now I'm partial to the oil scrub BLO finish. It turns out absolutely silky smooth.
I'm going to finish my next Handi this way.
Enjoy the gun porn.

hey......I've seen those Yugo Mausers before......October 1rst on another website.  I saved the pictures because I liked that bent bolt so much.

Nice rifles.

I like the way the oil finishes leave such a smooth, warm feeling to the wood.  (I assume by "oil scrub" that you mean filling the pores with wet-sanding)  I haven't tried BLO but was thinking of using it on the Yugo 24/47 that I have on order.

You are right about the patience.  If you think that it is sanded "enough" then you are not even close to being done.  You can always make it better.  Either in preparation sanding, between coats of oil, or on the finish.

The oil finishes are more forgiving of mistakes too, in my opinion.

Bluebayou,
Here is a link to a site that describes an oil scrub BLO finish. The guy doing  the
wood finishing is named Candyman. He has forgot more about refinishing rifle
stocks than most people will ever learn in their lifetime period! He does some
great work bringing old milsurp rifle stocks back from the dead. The wood on a
Handi is real easy to work with compared to a 60+ year old beat up cosmoline soaked
stock that most of the milsurps have. After stripping I sand the wood smooth with 400
grit sandpaper then I whisker the wood using a damp rag and some 600 wet or dry
sandpaper before starting the oil scrub. It turns out so smooth you just can't keep
your hands off of it after you're done!
