Scope on a 45-70 Buffalo Classic?
« on: January 11, 2009, 06:46:02 PM »
Well, I FINALLY got to take my Buffalo Classic out today. Didn't kick nearly as hard as my Winchester Model 1917 Enfield 30-06!!

One thing I learned... my eyes aren't what they used to be, lol!  I'm thinking I need to put a scope on it.  I know it's drilled and tapped.  What sort of rail do I need to get?  Also, I have a Weaver model V9-B 3x9 sitting in my closet not doing anything.  Would this be a good choice of scope for this rifle??  If not, what would be a good scope (affordable too).

Thanks.

you can buy scope bases that fit the handy rifle at Midway and they will fit the buffalo hunter as well.  They take weaver style rings.  The scope should work fine but I do not know how far out it will reach.  Once you zero it check to see if you can get on target at longer ranges.  The 45-70 has lots of drop so at 200 yards your slug needs to be several inches above line of sight at 100 yards depending upon the velocity of your load.  One last thing make sure you keep your eye back from the scope as far as possible or you may get a dent in the head as I did some years ago with a Ruger #3 in 45-70 when I got too close.

you can scope a BC just fine. see my sig pic below. the weaver 93 and 82 rails work well. also check the FAQ's on centerfire rifles forums. halfway down the FAQ's there is a topic that shows what rails fit and a few pics of them and descriptions of yet a few more that work, including the NEF ultra scope rail.
keep in mind that you, more then not, are going to want a scope with more eye relief,  about 5 inches or more. depending on what ranges you expect to shoot, you may want a scope that has bullet drop hash marks for 150 200 and 250 yards. and cheaply constructed scope may not hold up to the recoil of the BC, when you get up into the marlin levels the BC can deliver a solid thump and some scopes cant take it and loose zero.

I put a SIMMONS AETEC old style 3.8x12x44 on mine.
Looks a little large but it does a fine job.
Lots of eye relief.

That's what I was concerned about - the scope not taking the recoil and losing zero.  The Weaver V9-B, I believe, was a pretty good scope when they first made them.  Probably better in quality than I could afford in a new one right now.  I suppose the only thing to do would be to get a rail, mount the scope and see how it handles it.  Thanks for the info, everyone!
