rethroat 223Rem and 308Win to 5.56 and 7.62?
« on: December 26, 2008, 10:43:20 AM »
Is it feasible to rethroat "sporting"rifles from 223Rem and 308Win to
5.56x45 NATO and 7.62x51 NATO respectively?,is it cost effective?
I like to use military surplus[boxer, non corrosive] ammo for plinking and varmints. The ammo is cheaper and the varmints don't appreciate being hit with whatever one uses.
My rifles:bolt,pump,lever,break open:are chambered in:223Rem and 308Win.
Yes,I know I'll void any factory warranties[that also applies to any handloads,so it's a "non-issue"].
Can it be done?,possible cost?,who does it?
Thanks.

Dimensionally, 308 Win and 7.62x51 NATO are same.  Pressures are different.

Perennial argument material here.  Plenty to read with Google.

223 Rem and 5.56 are slightly different throat-wise.

7.62 is lower pressure than 308 Win, fire away without worries except for cheap quality ammo as a rule.  I have some Australian that is fantastic.

Personally, I shoot 5.56 in my 223 Savage, but don't tell.  Is it prudent?....your choice.

My opinion on your orginal question is, "why bother?"  I suppose that you could increase the leade of the throat in a 223.

I wouldn't bother. The slight diffrence there is is for auto loading rifles so it chambers and extracts easy. sporting rifles don't usually have any extraction problems like a combat rifle dose. I don't use surplus ammo in mine but I do use surplus brass.

Why? Because it is very practical to re-supply from dead enemy troops.

wow
Okay, how about "why bother with trying to make such a marginal difference in the 5.56 chamber that it is questionable that it matters anyway?"
