crimping the 45 acp ??
« on: January 11, 2009, 03:46:06 AM »
New to loading 45 acp......decided to try to cut my ammo costs by loading for it.  The two pistols are the Springer GI and Ruger 345..........can I use a canalured (sp) bullet for the 45acp ?  I realize the 45acp headspaces on the edge of the case....must be taper crimped ?  Will a taper crimp work with a canalured (sp) bullet ? Maybe I don't need to crimp ?? Another question...my dies are Lee 45acp , 4 die set with a separate crimp die.  I can't tell if I have a taper or a roll crimp die ...is there an easy way to tell ? ( never dealt with taper crimps)  The directions with the die set don't say anything about what type of crimp die is included.  I have a box of Horn. 200 gr XTP/HP I would like to try through these pistols....anybody load the XTPs in a 45 acp ?      As always ...Thanks , irold

The Lee die set has a taper crimp for the ACP, I crimp all my ACP ammo but I can't say I've ever loaded a bullet with a canalure for ACP so I can't answer that, I used only Lee dies thou until I bought a Dillion square deal b for my .45s and they worked as well as the Dillion dose Just no where near as fast. 8)

Yes, the RCBS taper crimp will work for canalured bullets.   My advice is to not over crimp.

Buy roll crimping this caliber you will be forcing HS to be off the extractor. IF you extractor is properly tuned it will hold the rim against the firing pin allowing for ignition. If its not or is loose, it will allow the case to move with the FP hit likely causing miss fires. So many things will suffer. Missfires, inconsistent accuracy and hi pressures could result. High pressures can result if that case is allowed to move forward and still fire. The chamber will not have sufficient room to allow the brass to let the bullet go and a dangerous pressure spike will result.

All ACP dies are taper crimp. There is no good reason to roll crimp one, you just don't need to do this. If you want to shoot these bullets, go ahead and do so. Just taper crimp as you SHOULD with a ACP caliber. If the cannalure falls such that it is under the mouth of the case you shouldn't crimp them. But if you feel you must, its likely you can adjust the OAL enough to make them work.

The bottom line is there really is no reason to recreate the wheel here, there are many good bullets designed for the 45ACP.
