Recent discussion about oversize bullets
« on: January 06, 2009, 07:31:54 AM »
In a recent discussion that I cannot seem to find now, we had made mention of firing oversize bullets in a 308 bore. Quick had made the comment about someone who had fired, I think, a 7.62x39 in a .243. I had personally seen a 307 Winchester fired in a 7mm Mag. No damage was done to the gun, but here is the pic of the fired case. 307 Win an the left, 7mm Mag on the rt, and the 307 fired in the 7 mag rifle in the middle. Luckily nobody was hurt, and no damage was done to the gun. Makes me a mite touchy when shooting around other people these days though.

You gotta be really stubborn to fire a round in something it is not chambered for.

Thankfully I've never done it or winessed it. That is neat how the 307 has a belt on it now. I would have never guessed a beltless would form a belt when fire formed. That was some extreme pressure. Thank god the barrel took it without someone getting injured.

Not really stubborn, just a case of someone not paying attention. They were shooting 2 different guns, had ammo for both on the bench, and picked up the wrong cartridge when they were ready to shoot. It was at my dads house, now if anyone comes over we try to make sure only one gun and only its ammo is on the bench at a time. Still makes me worry thinking about it.

False advertising - that's what I'd call naming this thread "Recent discussion about oversize bullets".

It's more like, "What happens when you do something stupid with guns" or "Firing the wrong ammo in you rifle".

I must have missed the oversized bullet discussion below, but I do all the time, when it is concerning cast lead bullets.  In fact, it's more preferable to shoot cast .001-.003" oversize.  Go undersize (unless it's soft lead, low velocity) with the diameter and you are mostly asking for a leaded bore.

What kind of 7mm Rem. Magnum gun was that 307 cartridge fired in?
I'm guessing it was a single shot?
