30-06 loads
« on: December 30, 2008, 04:15:20 PM »
For those who reload what bullets/loads do your Handi 30-06 like? I put one on lay-away today mostly for the reciever and stock but if I decide to keep the barrel I will reload for it and will be looking for a good place to start loading. Thanks, Charlie

I usually load Speer 125 gr TNTs, Sierria 165gr SPBTs, Nosler 180gr Ballistic Tips and Partitions.  I can not remember the powders I am pushing them with and I can not get to my reloading bench right now.  Will try and give you that information tomorrow.  The Handi 30-06 is my favorite gun.  I carry it year round for everything from Moose and Caribou to Wolves and Coyotes.  I really don't want to run across a Big Bear with it, but if it happens it will do the job if I do my part I am sure.  Lynx and Foxes are the only things I don't like shooting with it.  A little too much gun for them.  Love to shoot Red Squirrels with it.  The result is totally awesome.

I have shot wolves out to 700 yards with it, but try and limit my shots to not more than 500 yards.  The Caribou in my avitar was shot with my Handi 30-06, using a 180gr Nosler Partition, at 250 yards.

As for keeping that barrel, I would.  It is the most versatile cartridge made.  That barrel deserves it's own receiver.  It can be used for every kind of big game in North America, even the Big Bears of Alaska if you do your part.  You can load cartridges with bullets from 95gr to 250gr.  The only one I have had bad performance from was the Speer 100gr Plinker.  You have to hold the velocity down with that bullet, or it comes apart in flight.  It is so short and fat it's like shooting a pistol bullet.  I personally have not loaded the 95gr bullets, I think they would be a repeat of the 100gr loads.  I have loaded the Barnes 250gr bullets.  They pack a wallop, my wife killed a charging Grizzly with them.

'32, My "go back to load" is 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tips over H 4350, CCI LR primers, C.O.L. 3.340" . Now, this

C.O.L. is out of the "book" & is .168" off the lands in my barrel but it still groups 1 1/4" when me & the rifle

are feeling good. So I wouldn't get hung up on getting close to the lands right away, although it could help

later. 165gr Accubonds & 165gr Hornady SST's also hit to the same POI  in my barrel. IMR 4350, Varget,

H 414, & 760 have also worked well for me.  ;) The "sales job" that Sourdough delivered sounds just like

the one I got in 1963 & is still very true ! EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS A 30-06 ! Enjoy It !    ;D   Jim

Here's a heavy bullet load(i like heavy bullets) that shoots very well out of my Handi. This is a book load but my Handi loves it.

The 200gr Nosler Partition shoots real good with RL22 in my Ultracomp.

Sierra 165 BTHP over a stiff charge of H4350 has worked in all the '06s I have run it in. Don't have a Handi in '06 though.

The last Handi I bought was in 30-06.  Sold off the pallet wood stocks, & put a tamer stock on it - it's a favorite now.  Still working on the mess H&R/Remington made of it (sent back for extra barrels).

Got some great groups out of a Lyman 311041 173gr slug pushed by a load of 30.0gr of H4895.  Haven't chrono'd it yet but I think it's a lumbering 1700-1800 fps.  Went through both lungs of a 6 pt (4 if you don't count the too short eyeguards) deer and took out the top of the heart.  Deer went a total of 40 yards & piled up.  I've had deer run farther (but not by much) when hit with a 165 ballistic tip with a top load of W760 pushing it fast.

The accurate load for my 7.62x39 (with a 180 gr slug Lyman 311407) was pushing 1880 fps, the 30-06 is easy shooting from one end of the scale to the other - it's much easier shooting than the 7.62x39.  The 311407 should be a winner in the 30-06 as well.

If you're into economics, I think I have 14-15 cents in each loaded round - not counting my time - it's a hobby & I don't sell them.  I've got 2-3 boxes of 165gr Ballistic tips that were bought back when they came in 100 rd boxes - I may have them for a long time at this rate.

If you hunt places like sourdough is at, don't mess with the cast, unless you go to a bigger bore size.

The Hornady 150-grain BTSP has always been my favorite bullet in the ought-six. I move it along with a middling charge of either Hodgdon Varget or IMR4064. Lately CCI primers are what we can get around here, so I've been using the standard #200. My Handi .30-'06 likes the load seated long, and my Ruger M77 likes it seated at the cannelure, but they both shoot it well. Hornady's 165 BTSP and the Nosler 165 Ballistic Tip have both done well with IMR or Hodgdon 4350.

My ought-six Handi gives good results with the Lyman 311041, but really shines with Lee's 180-grain round nose, over about 25 grains of Reloder 7. Consult a good manual for exact charge weights. If I could get SR4759 around here, that bullet might do even better.

Jacketed or cast, Uncle Sam's old standard cartridge is still the most useful smokeless round ever developed for shooting game in North America.

I only really load two loads in my 30-06's.. BOTH with IMR4350 powder and either 165 or 180gr bullets. Has shot very well in every '06 I have tried them in.

I have said many times I do not like to post charge weights but this one has been around and quoted by my most everyone, so I'll post it as well...

165Gr bullet and 57Gr's of IMR 4350 powder.

180gr bullet and 55Gr's of IMR 4350 powder.

These have proved safe in my guns, others may vary. As always, PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK ALL LOADS with reputable manual (s).

Heehee!! Hit the propellant jackpot last weekend! Crossed Big Muddy to visit the gunshops in Winona MN, and each of them had at least one of the powders I have been looking for locally. I now have a good supply of IMR4227 and SR4759. The former is for a 215-grain Lyman GCSWC in the .357 Max Handi, and the latter for my good old 180-grain Lee RN in the ought-six. There's a new Bushnell Banner 3-9x sitting on the .30-'06, too. Now, when the cold and snow back off just enough to get out to the range, there'll be lotsa lead a-headin' downrange!! Happy New Year!

Mine loves the 180g Winchester PP's.  Whether it's out of the box or handloads you can't beat the 180's.
