Cheap ammo
« on: November 30, 2008, 02:22:04 AM »
I just bought my stepson a new model 11 .308. I am thinking about get some cheap, steel case, imported ammo for him to practice with. Will this cause damage to the chamber, bolt, extracter etc?

If can you need to make sure it is not corrosive ammo. if you have a tight chamber it can cause stuck or hard to extract cases

JMHO -The model 11 in 308 is not a "plinker". It is a serious 1 shot, 1 kill rifle.  It is the kind of rifle that
deserves to have good rounds put through it one @ a time & evaluated after each shot, eather through
the scope or through a spotting scope.  Shooting lots of cheap ammo can lead to some bad habits, & as
you suspected, could be hard on the rifle.  I say shoot the good stuff & make every shot count. Jim  ;)

Oh well, never mind. I went to a gunshow today and found out there is no such thing as cheap ammo anymore.

That's the truth.  I recently bought a ruger 10-22 becuase a 22LR is the only to shoot cheaply, and even those rounds are getting more expensive.  As far as the 308 goes with today's factory prices, you might as well shoot what you're going to hunt with or start reloading.

Might be pointless to mention , but you can get the Fed 150 gr blue gray box for about $12 to $14 at my local wal-mart which compared to alot of other sources is pretty reasonable .. Also you might want to look into mil surp if said rifle can handle that ammo .. But yeah ammo isn't uber cheap anymore.. And if its one rifle and one caliber? A good single stage press a father, a son and a good time with one another learning to reload for the boys rifle , Is never a bad thing . And quite possible a life long hobby that he will share with his boy one day. Or maybe thats worth mentioning ;)

I have 3 regular Savage 10fp's, the standard 24" in 223 & 308 and a 20" in 308.  They are all serious indeed, but I began to use South African 7.62x51 surplus in the 20 incher due to economic reasons and I already had the surplus ammo on hand.  To say the least it has been a blast.
