nothing as reliable as my h&r
« on: January 07, 2009, 07:36:32 AM »
been looking for a .22mag bolt gun. but both marlin and savage seem to have more problems/flaws than my ultra varmint. so i need to spend big dollars to get a decent rifle? guess i'll stick with the old h&r.
if i change the stock from laminated to synthetic will i save much weight?

Stock weights are listed in the FAQs and Help sticky.

My Topper 58 12 ga shotgun has been used and abused for years. It is pre-transfer bar. The abuse only made her stronger. I would be hard pressed to find a stronger, more reliable action.  ;)

why don't you try posting a WTB in the classifieds? They are a bit fouled up right now since there is a (hopefully) trial run of splitting up the classifieds into 3 segments and you will not get as many members to see your request as before this convoluted and tiresome system, but someone may see it. I must say although this difficult and bothersome system hurts the majority of the members and it was out voted by more than two to one before it was tried anyway (why even have a poll?), I believe it does help those that are here to mainly sell for a profit so you may get a response...best of luck, and I am sure there are a synthetic stock set out there for you if enough get to see your WTB....<><....:)

(866)776-9292 toll free, but be prepared for a wait on hold.  :-\ You may be happier ordering it direct from Choate or Midway. Brownell's also carries the straight comb, but not the monte carlo.

I have a stainless 983S Marlin 22 Mag tube magazine bolt action rifle. It is a nice gun.
Very accurate. It is nice having 10 rounds on hand when you need them. I have never
had any trouble with it. That being said I would like to get a 22 Mag barrel for my
Sportster. I'm sure it would be just as accurate and a heck of a lot cheaper. Being
that the H&R is a single shot it wouldn't tempt me to shoot a bunch of expensive
22 Mags rapid fire like I do sometimes with my 983S. I can't help it. It's too much
fun! ;D Seriously though, I have 17 HMR and 17 M2 barrels for my Sportster. Both
of them will shoot 1" or less at 100 yards if there is no wind. I don't see the 22 Mag
being any less accurate. It also wouldn't be as wind sensitive as the 17's.
