I SHOOT MORE THAN JUST THE BIG GUNS!
« on: January 12, 2009, 03:24:02 PM »
Just thought I'd spread the word that small stuff can be fun too!  50+ lbs of recoil isn't needed for a good time!  ;D

Here's the results of some shooting I've been doing with my 6mm Ackley.  No...it isn't a handi, but this is where I hang out here on GBO.  It's a Savage 110 action with a 26" heavy barrel I put on myself.  95 grain SMK's at 3400 fps.  Next barrel will be 30" and 1-7" twist for the new 117 DTACS that are coming out.  I'm broke now due to highschool sports (can't work) so that barrel will have to wait a while.

What the new rounds with the 117 DTACS will look like-

We'll start short range and work our way out...

550 yard 3 shot group, right around an inch-

Some 750 yard groups-

(The three at the top of the gong)

Let's stretch the range...(shooting to the fartherest spot way down yonder)

And another 1k+ shooting area...we're shooting about to the woods here

View through the scope at 1k at 24x, the white dot is our gong (it was bright out!)

Some 1k shooting (no real groups but you can see different sized marks, mine are the "medium" ones)

(Had a great group here! Notice the red!)

(I think the wind was blowing left  ;))

1050 yard group (the four make a good group, but #5...yuck)

The beast (all work done by me  ;D)

A few kills-

Very good shooting Tyke! ;D
And nice job on the 110, it's a looker and a shooter.

Where'd the mohawk go? :D

Man, ya'll done gone and messed up your supper!  That was a perfectly good squirrel.

Good shooting.  1000 yds is a mighty long way to shoot anything!

Ty, you'd be right at home here.  The latch string is out.  We've got plenty of squirrels, but ya gotta bring yer own possum.  It's going to be about 10 below tomorrow with 30 mph winds.  You may want to wait a couple of days before you come :D ;D :D ;D

For Ty and all you guys and gals, you're always welcome.

I wish I could just practice a 400 yard shot. Best shot anywhere I hunt is 260.
Great shooting.

What scope do you have mounted on that?  How many MOA were you up at 1050?

I have the same stock on my 25-06,

I have since up graded to a Burris Signature 8-32x44, but havent gotten a chance to shoot it past 500 yards with the new optics, the last 3 groups with it at 500 yards were under 1.5", the best was .75"....thinking I want to build a new long range rifle, Savage or a Stevens might be my action.

First off, multiple groups around .2 moa at 500 yards is amazing shooting!

I am 16.75 moa up at 1k, and 18.5 moa up at 1050 yards, thats being sighted in at 390 yards.

Scope is a Bushnell 6-24x50, the tracking on it has been superb to say the least.

WOW.  Great jobs all around.  Most guys would be happy with 1.5 at 200yds. :o  Keep up the good work.  Not too sure about that squirrel though.  You could start aiming for the head with that kind of shooting. ;D  It'll leave a little more for dinner.

At least .6 on the DTAC.

Believe it or not the barrel is an ER Shaw prefit!  Birthday present and man does it shoot!  I haven't cleaned it in almost 300 rounds now and it's shooting as good as ever.  The 100 yard groups are about MOA, but the long 6mm bullets "go to sleep" around 200, or so I'm told.  All I know is the groups at 300+ are less than MOA on average.

My 25-06 doesnt get cleaned.  I find that it takes about 50 rounds until it really starts shooting after I clean the barrel.  So I just stopped cleaning it.  At our club we have a Club Match where we go from 100-500 yards shooting 3 shots for score at each target, so 15 round total.  One of the guys lets his daughters shoot his rifle and he cleans it every time before the next person shoots it.....I have told him more than one time that he isnt going to have to worry about shooting the rifling out of it he is going clean out of it....I shoot at higher score everytime.

If you look at the heavy .224 bullets 77-80gr's you will see that they dont shoot very well at close range....ussally +1MOA.  they really arent made for short range stuff, but they start kicking into gear at 600-1000.

I was going to build up a 308 on a Savage, maybe I should rethink that and go with .243 of some sort.
