Need help with Handi decision
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:41:35 AM »
I have a bull barrel 308, same receiver fitted with 45/70 barrel, 7mm-08 rifle, 17m2 sportster.  Now..........what about a 30/30, or a 357, or a 444.  Which one if you had to choose one of these, and had the others.

Thanks for the input.

I have all three of those. It depends on what you want to do with it. 357 can't be beat for a plinker round and will do for a short range deer round. The 30-30 is a round that generally shoots well and is a pretty good deer round out to 200 yards or so. Then the 444 Shoots well , but is sort of a 45-70 duplicate. It does not have as good of bullet selection as the 45-70. For me the 357 , which I reamed to 357 Max would be my choice, but that is me. I do not think you can go wrong with any of them. BTW is the 17 M2 a barrel that came off a combo unit, with an off center bore? Good Luck and Good Shooting.

revbc,

Go down to the "I couldn't take it any more" thread.  Maybe not "which one", but "which one first".

Hope you have better luck than I did with the factory rebarreling.

LaOtto222,

The M2 is a regular sporter, not a combo gun.  I'm really leaning toward the 30/30.  One reason is I just traded a duplicate 308 die set for a 30/30 set.  Guess it gives me an excuse to buy the 30/30.

The 308 can be loaded to duplicate the 30-30.

The 45-70 has your heavy hitter role covered so this would rule out the 444.

This leaves the 357, I bet if you went with this barrel it would get shot alot more than the others, probably more than the others combined. 38 Specials can also be shot in this barrel and if you decide you would like a little more power and not loose the ability to shoot the Special and Magnums you could rechamber it to the Maximum.

GOOD SHOOTING!

You won't go wrong with a .30-30, but I love my three .357s, .444 just don't trip my trigger. 8)

clearly you need a 357 and a 30-30....you can get the 444 later....see how this all goes.  I am a very big fan of pistol caliber rifles for plinking, they are really fun.  I am also a really big fan of cast bullet 30-30 shooting...9 grains of powder and a cast bullet make for some real economical fun, and don't ever understimate the capability for precise accuracy with cast bullets in a 30-30.

I've also got to go with the .357.  The .30-30 can't do what your .308 already does, the .444 can't do what the .45-70 does.  And has been stated, the .357 will shoot .38s, .357 and you can ream it to .357 Miximum and still shoot all three.  The plus side is the .357 and .45-70 Handis and my .308 Ruger are the 3 most accurate rifles I own.  The .357 has to be the rifle that gets used the most.  It has virtually replaced the .22 rimfires, and the .30-30s.  When I go "out back" on my place, the .357 Handi and Blackhawk are the ones in the truck.

Merry Christmas

  I don't know... a .30-30 with .311 round balls is a lot of fun.
