Scope mounts for Contenders

Hi Guys,

I am wondering what is your favorite mount for the Contender Carbine? I am going to be shooting .17HMRs in the thing if that makes a difference. I am interseted in hunting squirrels with that set up. And while your at it what scope would you use? I am thinking that a 1-4 power would be enough. What are your thoughts?

All I ever use are the Weaver 92A's. As for a scope I prefer a little more mag than that but 4x is probably plenty.  KN

I have had good luck with Burris and Redfield mounts, I have recently been using some of the Warne steel Weaver type bases and Warne Maxima rings.  On this light recoiling chambering you would probably be best off getting the standard aluminum Weaver type base and standard Weaver rings, will be inexpensive and should have no problems holding on with that light recoil.

I started out using Burris, too much of a pain.

I since have gone to straight Weaver style bases using Burris Z rings. No problems and easy to mount.

Weaver and T/C bases work for me!

I have used Weaver or T/C bases with Weaver style rings on all my Encore and Contender barrels with no problems what so ever. In addition ro functioning well, they are readily available, inexpensive, and very simple and straightforward to use. What more could you ask? I do not have any "big bomers". 25-06 is probably the heaviest recoil I have, mostly varmit-type cartridges.

Thanks for the information guys,

Over the weekend I picked up a Leupold VX1 2-7x32 compact for my Contender set up. I have a gunsmith friend checking on T/C Duo-rings for me. What do you guys think of those? I am conserned about the eye relief and the clearance of the hammer. Should I worry about that with this set up?

Duo ring mount is a clean, neat set-up but doesn't allow for eye relief adjustment on carbine.  Like others, I go weaver base and Burris rings.

Do not use the Duo Rings on a Carbine.  You will not have any adjustment to get the eye relief right.  I like them on pistols and tried them on a carbine but they did not work right.

Since I am writing, I hate Weaver bases myself, but do use them on my Encore Carbines because they are the only mount that gives you great flexibility with the eye relief.  I use Burris bases with my Weaver bases.

I prefer the dual dovetail bases but have not found one yet that will give me the flexibility required with the eye relief.

UPDATE

Well guys I must have gotten lucky on the Duo ring mount. My friend at Gander Mountain assured my that the Duo ring mount would work and he was right! It works perfectly with the VX1 2x7 power. It should prove to be a deadly combo for squirrels this year.

I have not shot it yet. I can't wait! I have some Hornady and CCI ammo just waiting to be shot.

I will post up on the results if you guys are interested.

Take care,
Jay
