AA-1680 powder in 45-70
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:17:56 AM »
I was looking in the newest Barnes loading manual and noticed that AA-1680 was added to the 45-70 data. The velocity obtained with top loads is very impressive. Velocities well over 2500fps with 250 and 300 gr bullets was published. Has anyone tried this powder in their straight wall case rifles? How does this powder compair with the 4198s, RL-7 etc?

Accurate 1680 is very similar to the 4198s and Reloder 7 being on the "fast" side of powders for the 45-70.  According burn rate charts, some have Accurate 1680 closer to the 4227s than the 4198s, while others have it closer to the 4198s than the 4227s.  There is no reason why it wouldn't produce impressive velocities in the 45-70 with lighter bullets.  It is a good thing that manufacturers are experimenting with more of the powders that are available, should result in some diamonds in the rough.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

AA1680 is the 'best' powder in my .375WCF, giving much higher velocities than more "traditional" powders like IMR4198 and RL-7.  Accuracy has been very good too.  I have not tried it in the .45-70 but now I plan to....

Accurate has plenty of AA1680 data for the .375WCF in their #2 Manual.  But none for the .38-55.
