HMR cleaning....?
« on: January 18, 2009, 09:33:59 AM »
I know this is a really stupid question, and I know there has got to be a better way to clean my sportster than using a pull through.

Where do you get your patches from? What jag do you recommend? What solvent do you recommend?

Here's the deal....

I bought a good quality 17 cal. rod/jag/brush/mop set and 1" square patches that said they were for 17 cal. up. The jag is pointy, but doesn't 'spear' the patch like my 22 cal. jag does, so the patch falls off or gets miss aligned when pushed through the chamber. The brush fits through the bore just find, but I haven't fired enough rounds to need it. As for the patches, this is going to be a real PITA, they have to be cut into quarters before they will even fit the bore, and then they are 'really' tight. The first eight patches I ran through the bore were soaked in Boretech rimfire blend, almost felt like they got 'sticky' in the bore. The next 2 dozen patches I used Kroil soaked patches, and after a couple they pushed through easier, but still very tight. I've only fire 100 rounds through this rifle and even after 32 patches, they were still coming out light grey.

I figure I'm gonna fire about another 100-200 round through her, then (if I can find a better jag) run a couple patches covered in JB bore bright through the bore and molycoat the heck out of her.

I know the 17 is smaller, just wasn't anticipating this much fuss. Can't imagine the trouble you would have to go through for a 17 CF.... :o

Did you get clean patches when you cleaned it before you shot it? All I have ever had to do to mine is pull the patches thru after I first cleaned it then polished with JB . The H&R rimefires seem to not need cleaning much Mine only gets cleaned when the groups start to open up usually after 100 and gets cleaned before 150 then takes 5-10 to get the tight groups back and your good to go to 150 or so. I use break free and a brush to loosen fouling then patches till clean. But if you did not clean it well when new you may still be getting that stuff out of it.They are filthy when new. Kurt

All I had for the initial cleaning was a sectional rod and one of those plastic tips with the slot in it for the patches, none of my good rods would fit. I'm sure that there was still some gunk in the bore, but I did get all of the chunks and shavings out.
