new 25-06 and newly refinished
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:22:33 AM »
I recently bought a 25-06 handi and immediately stripped and refinished it.  I have completed the refinish job.  I haven't even shot it yet.  Still need a scope for it.

Am I seeing things?  Or is that stained Kawasaki green?

I like it.

I dyed it with Rit Dye.  I first laid down some yellow dye then put Kelly Green dye over the yellow.  It is a little darker in person than the flash made it out to be.

I really don't care for the look of the pallet stock.

this one isn't painted.  you can see the wood grain clearly.  It is more of a stain than a paint.

Unique way to add a little "camo" to the gun.  I hope the dye doesn't stain your hand and cheek when you shoot it.  I have seen similar stocks being done.  Some folks adhere a leaf in the sticky paint before painting the second color.  They then chip it off to leave a leaf pattern.  Looks like an apple Jolly Rancher candy!

Good Job!!

There is no way for the dye to come off....it has many coats of spar urethane over it.

I like it!

Bet you dye up a couple sets of the pallet wood stocks, and turn around and advertise them on the classifieds and they'd get snapped up in no time making you a little profit for your efforts, or maybe as trade bait!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I remember doing a couple art projects in highschool with Rit dye.  One technique that may possibly work, and look cool, is using paraffin wax.  It goes like this:

Sand your stock to accept the new finish.
Melt the paraffin in a cleaned out soup can.
Using a paint brush, and stencils if you like, "paint" the wax over areas that you do not want to receive the dye.
Dye the stock with your first color and let dry.
Remove the waxed area using an iron covered with an old t-shirt.
Once all the wax has been removed, dye those areas with a lighter color.
This can be done in as many layers as you like working backwards with the darkest to lightest colors.
