need sights Browning Hipower, got questions
« on: November 16, 2008, 06:36:41 PM »
I have a Browning clone Hipower.  I want to add Novak sights to it.  Would it be "uncool" to buy the sights from Brownells with my discount and to take it to a gunsmith?   Should I just get the gunsmith to quote mounting the sights including material.

Obviously, a gunsmith woud mark up the sights when he bills them to me.  Would it be a breach of etiquette to carry in the pistol and the sights?

For that matter.....when you get sight mounted on a pistol can you ship the slide and sights to a gunsmith or does he need the whole pistol?

I don't know the first thing about "etiquette" in this matter, but from my point of view you are buying the machining services, by the hour with some minimum, probably, of this gunsmith, so there should be nothing wrong with taking in the sights you want to have them installed.  He can quote you the price he wants.  If he is offended by this, find you a different gunsmith who wants to work.  I think the one I use would be happy to do this work.  There should be no reason he needs the whole pistol; the slide should be sufficient.

The slide is all he needs. He will have to cut a dovetail in the slide to fit the Novaks. It shouldn't matter if you already have the sights.

I wouldn't worry about it.  His mark up will only be a few dollars.  His real profit comes from his skills.  I'd buy the site if you want and tell him that you just bought the site at a really good price and you'd like to have him install it.
