CR-45LC SB1 or SB2 frame?
« on: November 14, 2008, 05:08:28 AM »
I have an opportunity to purchase a CR-45LC rifle and before considering the purchase, I wondered what the options are for barrel acceptance to the frame and stocks.  So, I called H&R yesterday and asked if I could have a 30-30 barrel fitted to a CR-45LC.  At the time, I was more concerned about the CR style stock being compatible with the added barrel and not whether the receiver was compatible with the SAMMI specs of the 30-30 ammunition.  The answer I was given by the H&R rep is that the 30-30 barrel cannot be fitted to a CR-45LC receiver as it is an SB1 receiver and the 30-30 barrel would require an SB2 receiver.

I recently spoke with another source who told me that he received different and mixed information from H&R; some H&R reps saying it's SB1 and some saying it's SB2.  Does anyone who owns one of these rifles know whether their receiver is SB1 or SB2?

As a follow-up question, can any barrel be added to the CR or Buffalo Classic style fame and forend?  More specifically, can a 30-30 barrel be fitted to a CR-45LC forend and frame....assuming the receiver is actually an SB2?

I believe your frame would be an SB-2 frame. There is a section in the FAQ at the top of this forum that explains how to tell the difference. If you send in the frame to get a 30-30 barrel fitted by the factory, it will fit the frame you have and the stock and fore end will fit it also. The barrel diameter vary from one run to the next and one barrel style to the next. the fore ends are a one size fits all thing. Some times there is a gap between the barrel and the fore end and some times it will fit tightly. I have a SL barrel taht has a considerable gap aroung the fore end. That same fore end can fit 44 Mag. 357 mag, 22 Hornet SL, 444 Marlin, 223 ultra bull, 30-30 barrels, I know because I have them all. There a few fore ends for specific purposes like the muzzle loading barrel and some of the shot gun barrels, but the center fire rifles are all the same. Tim will be along fairly soon, and if I am wrong, he will point it out. He is much more knowledgeable than I. He may be able lend more insight too. Good Shooting and Good Luck

Is the gun new from the factory or is it used??
If it is a new CR45-LC from the factory it is an SB2
The 45/410 combo gun uses the SB1 frame

A 30-30 barrel can be added to your CR45-LC frame and stock set if it is indeed an SB2.

Please read the FAQ's if you haven't already.
There is alot of info in there and pictures to show the differences in the frames.

Thanks for your answers thus far!

Actually, I don't own the rifle yet but I may be purchasing it..and yes, it's factory new.  I will probably buy it (if it's still available) if I find that I can actually have the 30-30 barrel added.  I know the Handi's can interchange barrels with no real problems of fore-end fit but since this is the checkered CR or Buffalo Classic style fore-end, I wasn't sure if the 30-30 (which is Handi barrel) would fit correctly.

I've looked over the FAQ's quite a bit, especially on the SB1/SB2 issues but I don't actually own or have the CR-45LC rifle to compare to the pictures etc.  I did do a search on the CR-45LC and found lots of different sight options etc but I didn't run across anyone changing barrels on that model.

Thanks again guys!

I believe all the CR-45's are SB2 and case color hardened I also have both the long and short CR and BC forends and they will fit all BBL's. Kurt

I had to ask the same question a month ago. If you compare the photos with the frame you will see it is an SB-2. Just to make sure someone has not fitted a different barrel to it, look at the left side of the underlug. It should have the last 3 digits of the serial number on it. On mine you can read them without taking the barrel off. It is confusing because they used the case hardeened color of some of the SB-1s on it. If in doubt take the barrel off and compare the frame to a known SB-1, it will be quite obvious. JamesIII

It should be an SB2 same frame as the buff classic and the stock set is the same for all rifles except the huntsman and the 10 guage, I have the same stock set on my .44 with the williams FP sights, Works graet and looks good. 8)

That's more misinfo from Madison customer service, they don't know a lot about H&R firearms, and are constantly telling us things that are totally incorrect. The CR45LC frame is the same SB2 frame as comes on the Handi and the Buffalo Classic, it's just case colored to a degree, the only rifle barrels that H&R offers on SB1 frames are those that are factory produced in 357 and 44mag, my guess is the CS person was confused and referring to the 45/410 Survivor which is on an SB1 frame.

Any barrel except the 10ga based barrels can be added to the SB2 CR45LC frame.

Would've liked to reply sooner, but had the last chance in the woods today trying to fill my deer tag, it's still unfilled. :-\

Blackhawker, you are going to love that 45 colt, it is just plain fun to shoot. I am getting into reloading so I can kick it up a notch or 2. There is a discussion about the stock and putting a recoil pad on it in an earlier thread. I like the idea of cutting a filler to straighten the butt out and then using a slip on pad, no modification to the stock needed. When I fitted a 20 Ga tracker II barrel to it that was just the ticket. I also ordered a forend from H&R for that barrel, just keep them together since they are fitted just like the barrels. A big thanks to all of you.  Tim, I had a feeling that the CS rep at H&R gave the wrong info but I wanted to be sure first.  Sorry to hear about your unfilled deer tag.  :(

I just bought a Buffalo Classic with a Target 38-55 barrel and I'm hooked!  It's only been a few weeks and I want another....HELP!!
(and I thought I had the bug bad with the T/C's)

Thanks again everyone.
