Scout scope on my 45-120? How?
« on: November 21, 2008, 02:51:50 AM »
I'm interested in putting a EER or pistol scope on my 45-120 for some better precision...has anyone threaded the barrel for a base before?

I just saw a post where a member killed a buck with his 500 S&W.  He had a scope in a scout type mount.  I believe he said he just tapped the barrel for a weaver style mount.  The first thing I thought of when I saw it was it's possible use for the 45/120!   ;D

See the Scout Mount links in the FAQs and Help sticky.  ;)

Y'all missed out on an excellent deal at Midsouth last week, they had Nikon Omega shotgun/muzzleloader 3-9x40 Nikoplex scopes on closeout sale for $140, I ordered two of em as soon as I got the email flyer, I checked a few minutes later to see if they still had any left and they were out already, I was gonna post a heads up, but it was already too late!! :'( The Omega has  5" of eye relief and works fine on heavy kickers, I have one on the SS 45-70 and another on the 338WinMag Tikka Lite. I thought maybe these were the reconditioned units with 90 day warranty that come available occasionally, but they aren't, they're the real deal.   They're still listed in their November specials, so ya might keep and eye on it in case they get more in.

Hello tykempster, I'm the one AtlLaw is referring to about the 500 S&W with the scout mount. You can see a picture of it in my post titled "Opening day with the Handi-Rifle".
I have done two of these on Handi barrels, one on the 500 and the other on a 45-70 barrel. On the 45-70, Tim put it in the FAQ's and it goes into pretty good detail about how I did it.
On the 500 S&W I used a 1.5-4 Burris handgun scope and the eye relief was too long to use the existing rear sight holes. I had to drill and tap all four holes for this barrel to get the propper eye relief.
I like the variable setup the best because on a longer shot I can crank up the manification. The buck in the picture was shot at about 125 yards and I turned the scope up to 4x and put the bullet right behind his shoulder.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I still dunno there Tyke.  On a 22" 45/70 the scout may look okay although I'm well satisfied with my old K2.5 Weaver mounted normally.  But a scout mount on a 32" barrel?   ???  Seems kinda like 44D's in an A cup.  It just don't fit!    :-\   Doncha think the eye relief on those long reproduction brass tubes would be enough?
